Academics
ELA - This month we will be reading about the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations. We will read about each civilization’s geographic location, way of life, developments, and downfall. We will use the information learned while reading about these civilizations to engage in writing informational/explanatory essays, and we will create a “Codex” project in which we will be comparing and contrasting the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations.
Math - In 5th-grade math, we are learning how to use order of operations by using parenthesis and/or brackets in numerical expressions and evaluating expressions having these symbols using the conventional order.
Science - This month 5th graders are working on Fossils! They are going to make fossil imprints with play-doh to have more hands-on learning.
Social Studies - In Social Studies, 5th graders are learning about World War 1

Happy Fall Ya’ll !!
I can’t believe it’s almost time for Fall Break! We’ve already covered so much in guidance class this year. We’ve learned about “looking on the bright side”, how positive attitudes can impact your life now and in the future, diversity and appreciating each other’s differences, and now we are studying bullying. I think the children are enjoying the group work and activities we’ve been doing.
We’ve also been enjoying some special activities like our homecoming dress-up days and special treats from the concession stand on Fridays. Keep in mind all of the fun activities we have coming up too like our basketball games, the band concert, and Harvest Festival!
As cooler weather approaches, let me know if your child could use a warm jacket, tennis shoes, boots, gloves, hygiene products, or really…just about anything! We have a WONDERFUL family resource department stocked full of free items we can give away to our students.
We also partner with a group called “Clothe-Our-Kids” so we can ask for all kinds of clothing from them. It is completely private and the only people who would even know your child’s name would be our nurse or myself! Remember, it doesn’t make you seem like a bad parent just because you need a little help from time to time. Everything is so expensive and we are MORE THAN HAPPY to help you and our little students!
Until next time…stay well, shower your kids with love, encourage good habits, and call on us if you need anything! My phone number is 931-937-8140 and my email is hevans@lcdoe.org
