It Takes a Village!
As we embark on this journey together, I wanted to take a minute to share something that is very near and dear to my heart - relationships! I feel compelled to share my passion for building a strong community and giving you a little insight into our goals for this year and beyond!
Our faculty and staff members have years of experience cultivating strong relationships with the students and families they serve. While research heavily supports what we believe, we focus on making connections because we love joining with our stakeholders to make the biggest impact we can on the lives of our students. At the top of our priority list for this year is establishing a strong learning community, with active involvement from families and other stakeholders, such as businesses and organizations in our area.
One way we hope to build our community is through monthly family involvement events. Each month, we will aim to have a different focus. Sometimes, our goal will be to provide resources and activities that are closely tied to curriculum. Other months, we may focus on community service or fellowship, instead. Our first family event will occur on Tuesday, October 16. We'll have a focus on math and the many ways we can support numeracy at home! Ultimately, these events will aim to bring members of our Lubbock-Cooper community together for a unified cause and to start ingraining in our students that education is important and that Lubbock-Cooper is behind them in their educational endeavors, even beyond their years at East Elementary.
As parents, the role you play in the success of your child is pivotal!
Some ways you can be involved on our campus include:
- join the East PTO
- attending meetings regarding your child's academic performance and services
- volunteer for special events on our campus
- attend field trips with your child
- volunteer in our library
- read with your child at home
- participate in community outreach events (like our upcoming Pirate Pantry drive!)
- attend monthly parent involvement events
- assist your child's teacher with special projects
- attend class parties
- mentor a student on our campus
In January, we hope to launch the Watch D.O.G.S. program, as well! This national program is aimed at involving fathers and father-figures in the school system. Men take a day off of work to volunteer on campus and get to experience many aspects of daily life at East Elementary! An individualized schedule is created for each father, ensuring they have time to eat lunch with their child(ren) and spend some time in their classrooms, as well. Additionally, volunteers may do safety checks around the building, work in other classrooms, assist in the library or other elective classrooms, or throw a football at recess. Be looking for more information on the launch of this program soon!
I wanted to also share with you that our campus has been 'adopted' by South Plains Church of Christ for the 2018-2019 school year. Through this partnership, the church is providing daily snacks and weekend meal bags for students who struggle with food insecurity. We appreciate the partnership with South Plains Church of Christ and their support of our East Pirates. We look forward to working with other organizations in our area as the year goes on, knowing that partnerships such as these provide valuable resources and services we cannot provide on our own.
We look forward to working with you this year as we lay the foundation for years of strong relationships at East Elementary! Feedback you might have regarding possible parent involvement events is always welcome! Many of you come from different campuses across Lubbock-Cooper and other districts on the South Plains. We've loved hearing about the great things you participated in on other campuses and can't wait to create our own versions which will work for our Pirates and their families! We love getting to create our campus culture with you!
It truly takes a village to raise a child and we are thankful we get to be part of the Lubbock-Cooper village with you!
Every day is a GREAT day to be an East Pirate!

Charleston Wrap Fundraiser - Starts Sept. 24
Charleston Wrap not only includes a ton of adorable gift wrap options, but also home goods, personalized gifts, and food options. Our hope is that a tradition of purchasing holiday wrapping items will be established so that our families and other community members come to depend on East Elementary students to meet their needs for gift-giving and gift wrapping!
A "sneak peek" display of items from Charleston Wrap will be set-up in our Discovery Center for families to preview as we kick off this fundraiser!
Traditional orders will be taken by our students. We will also have an online option for family members and friends who are out of town!
Our campus fundraising site is: www.charlestonwrapstore.com
Our campus code is: z-15339
More information will be coming home soon, but you are certainly welcome to login and start perusing the neat things we'll be offering! All items should arrive before Thanksgiving, just in time for holiday wrapping and gift-giving!
All East Elementary fundraising efforts will go towards establishing "The Leader In Me" - a character education program, based on the work of Covey and "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People".
