Solar System Project
Our class is going to begin the science chapter, Exploring Space, this week. We will be learning about space for approximately the next 3 weeks. We are going to be studying the characteristics of the planets, the order of the planets in relation to the sun, and constellations. In order to increase our understanding of these concepts, I am requiring that the students complete a project, a Solar System model. Students may create their model using any materials they wish, I want them to be as creative as possible, so sky’s the limit. I will be basing their grade on the following criteria:
· all 8 planets and the sun must be represented
· four facts about each planet/star must be included
o the facts must be written in a complete sentences
o one of the facts must include how you would recognize the planet
o one of the facts should say how far it is from the sun
· the planets are in the correct order in relation to the sun
· the inner and outer planets are identified
· a written description of the project
o the student will describe the materials used
The project will be due by Friday, February 24. Students can turn in the project early if they are complete with no penalty. There is enough information in the textbook and/or workbook for the students not to require any outside research via computer. I will get them a poster board should they require this material for their project.
Attached is the rubric I am going to use to grade the project. The rubric MUST be turned in with the project. I am including a signature line at the bottom of this letter for parents to sign so I know that you are aware of the assignment and my expectations. Please initial the rubric as well. I will send this letter and the rubric back home with your child today to use as a reference to complete the project. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me- francisd@rcschools.net or send a note in your child’s agenda. I am extremely excited to see what the students create!!!
If they are both not signed and returned I will deduct 5 points each off their grade.
If I have to replace the assignment paper or rubric I will deduct 5 points for each time they are replaced.
