Pirate Musical
It is my pleasure to invite you to join the 5th and 6th Grade Horizon Pirate Players Theatre Group! Joining the Horizon Pirate Players is a great opportunity for students to develop skills in singing, music reading, acting, dancing, stage presence, poise, confidence, leadership, cooperation, socialization, and much more. Our theatrical performance this year will be “A Pirate Christmas” by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson.
The theatre group will rehearse before school on Tuesdays and Fridays beginning September 18th - December 21st. Depending on how many students sign up we will either have 5th and 6th grade combined rehearsing on Tuesday and Friday, or 5th and 6th Grade separate with a rotating Tuesday and Friday schedule. Students who are assigned roles will have to attend additional mornings. If a student is in band they must go to band practice on their band days, and can attend Pirate Players on the mornings they do not have band practice. A more detailed schedule will come out after I have contracts returned.
We will gather in my classroom (Horizon music room 228) from 7:25 - 8:15 AM. Since it is before school, students will be able to take the middle/high school busses for transportation. In most cases, the early routes are very similar to the elementary routes. We suggest that you use the next week to locate an early bus stop at, or near the location of your regular morning pick-up spot. The early routes usually stop about an hour before the elementary routes. If after a few attempts you cannot locate a usable bus stop, please contact Riteway (262-691-9868) directly and they will give you the times and locations of nearby route stops. It is okay if your bus arrives late. Just walk over from the drop off (at high school) as swiftly as you can. Of course you can drive your child to rehearsal and carpooling is encouraged.
Our performance will be Wednesday, December 19th, at 6:30 PM (call time is 6:00 PM so we can get in costume and any make-up). We will have a school matinee at 2:40 that same day. Performances will be in the high school auditorium. Students will need to supply their own costumes and accessories.
If you decide to join the Pirate Players, here’s what needs to occur:
Complete the contract and turn it into Ms. Barootian soon. (Students received these)
Make plans to arrive at school every Tuesday and/or Friday (depending on enrollment) by 7:25 AM (A more specific schedule TBD and communicated as soon as contracts are turned in and roles are assigned).
Prepare your mind, body, and voice for some great singing, acting, and dancing!
Questions? Please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Barootian baroamy@pewaukeeschools.org (262) 701-5570.
Reading and Writing
We have started our Narrative Writing Unit. This week we talked about strategies to use to help them create ideas for stories. We talked about SIX different strategies they can use to help them create ideas for stories. Check in to see if they can list all of those strategies for you.
I am impressed and proud of how hard our fifth graders worked during reading and writing this week. They are starting to get back in the swing of things quickly!
Math
WOW! What a week! I am impressed with the students' brilliant thinking this week! Through a 3-Act Task, math games, and other activities, students left me speechless with their strategies and thought processes. Take a look at the video below to see some of the highlights.
Also, students completed the Unit 1 pre-test. On Monday, we will officially start Unit 1: comparing and adding/subtracting fractions visually and symbolically. Students will have homework almost every night. Remember, you can always access these assignments through the Canvas calendar or module 1 on Canvas.
