Math
This week we also started a second set of warm-up activities. Students are using their SC Ready practice test questions to review math skills and test taking skills. Each day, students review two questions from their practice test and we discuss how one might find the best answer from the choices given. Your child should be able to tell you why having a blank test booklet is a tragedy! I know with the knowledge we are gaining about the "game" of testing, students are going to amaze us all on the real SC Ready test at the end of he month. With that being said, don't forget that it's never too soon to set those bedtime routines and get on a night time schedule. (I know at my house the change in time for us all off track.). Waiting to get a "good night's rest" until the night before the test just isn't enough rest for all the work these amazing leaders are doing each day.
Finally, we are finishing out the year with our study of geometry. Plans have been made and we will complete and cover all of our SC Curriculum stands well ahead of testing dates. Our next topics are area, perimeter, and volume. As always, I appreciate so much that you talk with your child about how these math skills are used in your everyday life. I must give a shout out to Raven for explaining that when buying an air filter for her home her family needed to know the area of the return vent. We will use this idea to move into volume as the filter measurement actually has the third dimension measurement (don't tell the students!). Also, shout out to Professors Adams that you see pictured here for his explanation of our testing review during class.
I can't tell you how exciting and fun it is to teach your child! Thank you for sharing them with me!
English Language Arts
We started on our unit of theme and argumentative writing. We talked about the different theme topics. The themes of stories, songs and movies have been discussed this week. We listened to "What I Am" by Wil I Am and discussed the theme of the whole song. Frozen was a great movie to discuss different themes within the movie and what the theme was as a whole. The Other Side was a wonderful book with the theme of equality. There were great table and elbow partner discussions.
We are having so much fun discussing the issue of school uniforms for the argumentative writing unit. School uniforms is only a topic that we will be discussing for this unit. There is a lot of information about this topic and many outside views to read about. The students also have heart felt statements about the topic. Students will be flash drafting about everything they can think of or state about school uniforms in schools. Stating our reasons for having the views that we have has been wonderful to observe. I look forward to see great things with this excitement filled unit..
On Friday, the third block English Language Arts students went to Mrs. Spivey's Kindergarten class to read to our reading buddies!! Both classes look forward to the visit!
Science and Social Studies
This week in Science and Social Studies we talked about waves, currents, and tides. Students investigated with a 2-liter bottle with oil and water to create waves. We labeled the parts of a wave and discussed the causes and effects of waves, currents, and tides on land. Students received their study guides on Wednesday for both their Science and Social Studies test coming up this week. Tuesday students will take their oceans test and we will move into ecosystems. On Wednesday we will take our World War II test and move into the Cold War.
Mrs. Coble’s homeroom got to listen to our guest reader, Opa, as he described what life was like for him growing up in Germany as a child. He had many interesting stories to share with the students about not having food and eating lots of potatoes and turnips. He also shared he remembered not having money for shoes, so they tore the heels off of his mother’s shoes so he would have something one his feet. Wow! He also brought in a piece of the Berlin Wall to share with the students which you will see pictured in the newsletter. It’s amazing what we can learn from those around us who experienced it first-hand!
Thank you,
