ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear CCS Friends and Families,
We hope everyone had a relaxing and fun-filled Winter break. CCS is back in full swing with some exciting learning and celebrations this week.
Democracy came to life for a number of classes who attended Tuesday’s Town Meeting. We had student volunteers running the microphones around the crowd. Others listened to the discussion on some of the articles in the town meeting and had follow-up discussions in their classrooms. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone that contributed to supporting both town meeting and student learning happening in our school on the same day! This gratitude extends to:
- the many citizens and town employees/officers volunteering and working at the polls;
- our Security on Site team helping with safe traffic flow and building security;
- the patience of families during congested drop-off and pick-up times;
- our teachers for their flexibility in accommodating PE and Band classes in other areas of the building;
- our office and custodial staff for working out the logistics;
- Charlotte Town Constable Josh Flore and CVSD School Resource Officer for their ongoing availability and presence in our school community during special events and regular school days; and
- State Representative Mike Yantachka, who continued the theme of Democracy for many students as he spent Wednesday in classrooms observing instruction and learning and then sharing his work at the state level.
We continue to be thankful for the support of our community, as demonstrated by turnout to vote on our school budget and the CVSD construction bond!
Today, our third graders hosted Abenaki guest speakers Michael Descoteaux and Roland Blutz. This presentation is the culmination of a unit focused on traditional Abenaki culture, during which students learned about the "Original Vermonters” through a read-aloud and several nonfiction texts. Through a combination of reading, writing and creating, students learned about a variety of components of Abenaki culture to include, Food, Clothing, Villages and Movement, Families and Customs and Religion. These guests presented their cultural history prior to the arrival of the European settlers, sharing photos, artifacts, a few stories, and some native songs. Students were able to touch artifacts such as a variety of rattles, arrowheads, bone sewing needles, pottery, Abenaki baskets, and flint for fire-making and handheld drums.
Kind Regards,
Stephanie, Jen and Cassandra

CCS VARIETY SHOW
Calling all performers...it's time for the most exciting night in entertainment of the school year! This year's CCS Variety Show is on Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m.
All students, grades K-8, are welcome to perform, either individually or in groups. Children may participate in one act only. The only talent that's not allowed is lip synching/singing along with a recorded song--other than that, the sky is the limit. In the past we've had skits, comedy acts, hula hoopers, poetry recitations, singers, a kid eating dinner wearing a chicken suit, two kids with cellos and a whoopee cushion...and the list goes on.
Students must attend two practices after school, which are held on the following days:
Tuesday, March 10 from 2-3:30
Thursday, March 12 from 3-4:30
Friday, March 13 from 3-4:30
Monday, March 16 from 3-4:30
Wednesday, March 18 from 3-4:30
You don't need to sign up in advance for practice. Part 2 students are welcome to participate and will be walked back to the cafeteria after they're finished. All other students should be picked up promptly when practice is over.
Kindergarten students always perform a song all together--it's so cute--participation isn't required, but we really recommend it! Even the shy ones usually come around and it's the most adorable thing. More information to come about that.
Please email cheaevans@gmail.com or katiertaylor@gmail.com to register. Please include your student's name or the names of their whole group (only one parent per group needs to register), their grade(s), and the type of act they'll be doing.
Thanks, and we can't wait for another fun show!
GIRLS ON THE RUN IS COMING TO CCS
During each Girls on the Run season, girls make new friends through fun games and talking about what matters to them! Our trained coaches facilitate activities, challenges and discussions from our research-based curriculum to help each girl activate her limitless potential.
Participants develop confidence and tools for managing emotions, resolving conflicts and setting goals to navigate life challenges through adolescence and beyond! Physical activity is woven into each session to inspire a lifetime of wellness. After the 10-weeks, girls complete a 5K and see that the finish line is just the beginning!
GOTR is a spring program open to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. It starts the week of March 31st. Our team will meet Tuesdays, 2:00-3:45 and Fridays, 3:00-4:45. Our season culminates with Girls on the Run Vermont’s celebratory 5K on June 6th at Champlain Valley Exposition Center.
The registration fee is $100. GOTRVT provides financial assistance directly on the registration form for qualifying families. Please contact GOTRVT at 802-871-5664 regarding financial assistance options.
