Description of Energy

Nuclear energy is energy that comes from the nucleus of an uranium atom when it goes through a process called nuclear fission (splitting of the nucleus of an atom).

Renewable or Nonrenewable?

Although nuclear energy is very abundant, it is nonrenewable.

Brief History

  • After two German scientists had discovered the process of nuclear fission, a Hungarian scientist discovered their nuclear fission process and its ability to produce enormous amounts of energy.
  • During World War II, nuclear fission was first to make a bomb.
  • After the WWII, nuclear fission was developed for generating electricity.
  • The first nuclear power plant came online in Shippingport, PA in 1957.

Environmental Impact

  • Does not cause air pollution
  • Large fuel supply
  • A reliable energy source


  • Power plants are expensive & take a long time to complete
  • There is no safe disposal of nuclear waste
  • High risk of accidents

Major Uses

Nuclear energy is mostly used for electricity

  • It provides 13% of the world's electricity
  • France generates over 75% of its electricity with nuclear power
