English Learner team presents at INTESOL conference

Our English Learner team recently presented at the virtual INTESOL (Indiana Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) conference! Portage Township Schools was represented with two presentations.

Jen Hernandez-McDuell, Maria Figueroa and Nancy Talmage presented their process for creating the Elementary English Learner support videos that we have been using for both virtual and in-person learning this year. Mrs. Herenandez-McDuell also did a presentation featuring the Creative Virtual Research Project completed with her high school EL students.

We are very proud of the great work happening to create engaging lessons for our English Learner students!

Fegely students write letters to veterans

Our Fegely Middle School students wrote letters to Veterans last week!

Fegely Middle School Dean of Students Mr. Bachan, who is an Air Force veteran, led the lesson on Veterans Day. Our students watched a YouTube video about Veterans Day during their advisor class. They then wrote letters or drew pictures to thank veterans. They also participated in a moment of silence at 11:00 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month).

Mr. Bachan will be sending the letters, cards, and pictures to the Indiana Soldier Home in West Lafayette.

Myers students build boats that float

Our Myers Elementary School students spent some time last week completing a STEM activity! The students built boats using popsicle sticks, straws, and tape. The boats needed to be able to float and also transport "jewels." To test this, students took turns placing their boats in water and adding marbles to see how many the boat could carry before sinking. The winning boat was able to carry 11 marbles! All of our students did a great job!

PHS Construction Technology class pours foundation for housing project

Our Construction Technology students at Portage High School hit a big milestone on their housing project this week!

Mr. Bontrager’s Portage Student Builders worked hard to pour and finish footings for their latest home. The class gives the students the opportunity to build a home from the ground up. This up-and-coming house is part of a group of homes that the construction classes have built over the last few years.

Portage High School provides meals for families

Thanks to generous community donations, Portage High School was able to provide Thanksgiving meals for 25 families this year. Each family received supplies for a full Thanksgiving meal plus a few additional goodies. Mrs. Monahan’s classes also created a Thanksgiving decoration for each family as they picked up their meal.

Thank you to all of our generous donors. We love seeing our community come together to support each other! #PortageProud
