Loma Ridge Report

A Weekly Newsletter From Mrs. Berumen

EDL through the end of the year

I hope you all were able to enjoy spring break with quality family time at home. I know the news from Superintendent Terry Walker last week was disappointing and sad for all of us. There were tears in my home and my guess is there were tears in many of your homes as well (they might have even been parent tears!) ;)

As a staff we are saddened that we will not be able to finish out our inaugural year at Loma together on campus with your children and each other. That said, we are 100% committed to prioritizing our students' social emotional well-being by continuing to cultivate connections and relationships even in these circumstances. You will see our efforts virtually across settings- classrooms, library/innovation lab, engagement with me, staff members & peers, and through fun and meaningful social media campaigns. We want you to know that our roadrunner family is here for you and your children. We will all come out on the other side of this with grittiness, resiliency, knowledge and skills that we didn't have before this new reality.

As I communicated prior to spring break, I can't thank you enough for your patience, support and adaptability during this challenging time. We are here for you so please don't hesitate to reach out to any of us should you or your child need us.

When can we get our stuff?

This is a question that has likely crossed your mind since receiving the news that we will be extending EDL through the end of the school year. We plan to dedicate time and personnel to retrieving personal items to return to your children once the stay at home orders are lifted. Please rest assured that you will be informed once the timing is safe for our staff and your family to transfer these items over to you before the end of the school year.

In the meantime, if there is an item that is absolutely essential to your child's learning or health that is located at school and you cannot wait until we are in safer circumstances, please reach out to your classroom teacher and we will work on arrangements to leave the item for you. We appreciate your consideration of the health and wellness of our limited staff members on campus when contemplating whether an item is essential or not. Thank you!

Virtual Friday Flag Deck

We are excited to offer the experience of a recorded Friday Flag Deck each week for our students and we've added some fun new elements to the experience. Our staff collaborated to come up with something special and we hope our parents and students enjoy it each Friday morning. Here is a link to our IUSD TV channel where the Friday Flag Deck videos will be housed. Your children will see them each Friday morning via their teacher's daily communication. Enjoy, roadrunners!

Fun with Mrs. Berumen during EDL

I've had so much fun seeing our students in the videos they've posted in response to my first flipgrid video earlier this week and I can't wait to see their responses to my next one tomorrow. They are darling!

I'll be doing two flipgrids each week through the end of the school year. The teachers will share them with the students and they will also be accessible for student login via our school website. I'll be encouraging staff members to respond as well since our students haven't seen many of them since EDL began. I hope this is a nice way for all of us to feel connected during this challenging time.

EDL Resources

If you have not already visited our Loma Ridge Media Center website, please click here for library and innovation lab EDL including lunchtime activities! Thank you to Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Skeete for keeping reading for pleasure and STEAM learning alive during EDL.

Please also click here to access content from our visual and performing arts teachers. They have worked hard to provide continued learning opportunities for primary music and visual art and we appreciate their efforts.

Our elementary resource counselor, Mrs. Marrocco, has been popping into classroom sessions and staying connected with our students. She is available as a resource if you have any concerns or need pointers on how to help your child process the change in circumstances that we're experiencing. Please contact your child's teacher or me if you'd like us to connect you to Mrs. Marrocco.

Loma Spring "Let's Get Active" Challenge

We have LOVED seeing all of our roadrunners that have participated in our weekly campaigns since the start of EDL. I know that our community workers who were showered with roadrunner appreciation during this week of kindness and gratitude enjoyed the thoughtful notes and DASH artwork that were left for them. Thank you for your participation!

We are excited to start our next campaign. See the details in the flier below and don't forget to tag @lomaridgeiusd in your posts along with #getactivewithloma. We can't wait to see how you "get active" on social media!

IUSD Grab-and-Go Meal Program

Nutrition Services is providing free breakfasts and lunches to any IUSD student who needs them on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the same locations and hours of service that have been in place since the beginning of EDL (see iusd.org for more information on locations and times.) The meals provided on Monday will include meals for Monday and Tuesday, meals provided on Wednesday will include meals for Wednesday and Thursday, with meals provided on Friday for that day. This change was made to reduce parent trips and better align our practices with the principles of social distancing.

IUSD Mental Health and Wellness Supports & Resources

The outbreak of COVID-19 can result in various forms of stress, especially for students who may be struggling to process all of the implications of this health challenge and the impact of social distancing. IUSD’s Prevention and Intervention team, as part of the District’s Speak Up We Care initiative, has developed resources that may be helpful for students and families. This includes information about available IUSD supports, how to talk with children and teens about COVID-19, community mental health providers and resources, maintaining a sense of connection, and other healthy practices. Our staff will continue to be actively engaged with students both academically and in support of social-emotional wellness. More than ever, it is critical that our students sustain a sense of hope, confidence, and optimism. Click here to learn more.

IUSD Technology Support & Internet Access

IUSD’s Information Technology team has been working around the clock to provide students access to devices and the internet during this time. As a reminder, Distance Learning opportunities can be accessed from any device at home, the District will continue the Chromebook checkouts for those in need. Please note, to adhere to social distancing guidelines, the technology checkouts will require an appointment in advance. To request an appointment, complete this Technology Access Form. After completion of the form, you will be provided with pick-up location options.

For questions about devices and IUSD-related technology, email helpdesk@iusd.org. For questions about internet access, including free and low-cost internet options, please visit our Support Center.
