DHS Weekly Update
Thursday, January 20, 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
DHS Students and Families,
I wanted to remind you that we have two early-release days coming up in February - Feb. 10th and 11th. DHS students will be released at 1:35 PM. If you have students at other CSD schools, check with individual school communication to see what time they are releasing.
DHS is so proud of Max Bee-Lindgren who was recognized as Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars! #RegeneronSTS is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The top 40 finalists will be announced January 20th.https://bit.ly/3pTAVKm
CSD is beginning weekly surveillance testing at individual schools beginning over the next two weeks. If you are interested in participating, you have to sign up (see directions below) even if you signed up previously. CSD is working with a different testing company so we need to get your info and consent once again.
Go Bulldogs!

Weekly Covid -19 Testing at DHS
We will resume weekly COVID-19 testing at DHS next week with our new provider, Mako Medical. If you would like your student or students to participate, you must fill out this form, even if you filled out the opt-in form for testing last semester with the previous company. At the bottom of the form you’ll see a link to Mako’s registration portal. You must fill this out, as well. The link is specific to DHS. You will need to fill it out for DHS testing, even if you’ve already filled out a similar form for testing at Wilson Center or another school.
Testing will be conducted weekly on Thursdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (these hours are subject to change based on interest). Students/staff will be administered a rapid antigen test. If they test positive, they will return to the testing location for a PCR test. You will receive results via text/email. If your child tests positive, you will also be contacted by the school. All students testing positive for COVID-19 will need to isolate following the CSD isolation procedures.
If you have any questions contact Wes Hatfield (whatfield@csdecatur.net).
Vaccination Opportunity
The Dekalb County Board of Health will be returning to CSD to provide COVID-19 vaccines on Wednesday, January 26 at the Wilson Center. No appointment is necessary.
This is free to everyone in the community. This is a 12 and older event.
Vaccines will be available from 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm.
- All 3 COVID vaccine options will be available.
- COVID boosters are now available for everyone 12 and over.
- Any child between the ages of 12-17 receiving the COVID-19 vaccine must have a parent/guardian.
Location -125 Electric Avenue (Board Room Entrance), Decatur, GA 30030.
This will be an indoor event. Masks are required
Please contact Shonda Moore with any questions also, see below some additional information from the US Department of Health and Human Services
COVID-19 vaccines continue to work very well at preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death, including from the Delta variant. A booster shot is an extra dose that helps keep up your protection.
- You can get a booster shot 5 months after your 2nd dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine. 2 months after your single dose of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna (mRNA COVID-19 vaccines) are preferred in most* situations
- The best way to protect against COVID-19 is to get a booster as soon as you’re eligible.
- A booster is also the best way for you to stay safe this winter as you travel, gather indoors, and spend time with family and friends.
- It’s especially important for people age 50 and older, residents of long-term care settings, people with underlying medical conditions, and pregnant and recently pregnant people to get a booster because they are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
- You may choose whichever COVID-19 vaccine you want (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen) to receive as a booster shot. Your booster doesn’t have to be the same vaccine you received before. Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine is the only one authorized for people ages 12–17 years.
- COVID-19 vaccines can cause side effects in some people, but serious side effects are extremely rare. Most side effects go away on their own in a few days. The most common side effect is a sore arm at the injection site.
- You’re fully protected 2 weeks after your booster shot

Food Allergen Information from CSD School Nutrition
Food Allergen Information from CSD School Nutrition
We are excited to welcome back all of our students in 2022! There is a new document on the "Special Diets" tab of the CSD Nutrition webpage called "Allergens by Recipe," where we have created a chart for parents and students to quickly check for possible food allergens. Note: the allergens identified are the "big 8 allergens," which include wheat, milk, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, and fish/shellfish. There are more allergens, but these are the critical ones identified in school nutrition.

If your student has a food allergy, we encourage you to check out the list and speak with them about the importance of advocating for themself in any situation where food is being served to them.
Don't forget that meals are still at no cost to our students until the end of this school year!

Save the Dates: There are two great family-friendly events coming soon that both benefit DEF:
Mead Road Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, February 26th and the 20th Tour deCatur 5K on Saturday, March 12th! To register a community Krewe for the parade, please visit www.meadrdmardigras.org. Registration for the Tour deCatur 5K and one-mile Fun Run will begin on February 1st at www.tourdecatur.com.
DEF is teaming up with the counselors at Talley Street and Renfroe Middle School to keep the snacks stocked. We are also accepting donations to our weekend backpack program which provides supplemental food for students who need it. If you'd like to help with a donation, click HERE for links to each school's Amazon Wish List. Your orders will go straight to the schools.
DEF has several ways in which you can donate your time:
As a Virtual Pals tutor -- we need tutors to be paired with a 2nd- 8th grade Decatur student for a one-hour weekly session. Click here to apply: https://forms.gle/LoiZxoi6WvSe6WEr6
As a Virtual Pals Coordinator -- we need one person who checks in with the tutor pairs on a weekly basis. Time commitment is 1 hour per week. Email muslimo@decatureducationfoundation.org to apply.
As an AIM Mentor -- we need adult male and female mentors to be paired with a third-grader to have new experiences and find their passions. The time commitment is just 2-4 hours per month.
As a REACH Mentor – we need just one more adult male to mentor an 8th-grade student who has been nominated by his teachers for the REACH GA program. REACH mentors help their mentees through the rigors of high school and college applications. Time commitment is just 2-4 hours per month.
If you've got a little extra time to share your life wisdom with a Decatur student, we've got opportunities! Please visit www.decatureducationfoundation.org/mentoring to learn more and apply.
