Kamiak Weekly Update
May 13th, 2022
From the Principal’s Office
This week, we turn our focus to our seniors as they graduate and prepare to move on to grand new adventures.
The days leading up to graduation have been particularly excellent for our Class of 2022. At Senior Awards Night, we saw hundreds of students awarded praise and recognition – often with an accompanying financial scholarship or grant attached. The Senior Breakfast was a wonderful event, with musical performances and speakers reflecting on the students’ years together. Broken into two parts by a fire alarm, the Senior Farewell Assembly put our seniors on display in front of the whole school. Students were recognized for their excellence by department leaders and enjoyed their peers praise for their hard work and achievement. For our seniors, this was the last time they were gathered together with their whole school. And for some, it was the last opportunity to show appreciation to teachers and staff who have had profound impacts on their lives. The annual Senior Barbecue gave our graduates the opportunity to celebrate with just their friends and peers.
On Friday, June 10, our Superintendent and School Board will confer diplomas on nearly 500 graduating seniors. Our graduates are headed every direction after high school – trade schools, colleges, universities, service in the military – and we wish them all the very best. Go Knights!
Athlete of the Week
The Kamiak Athlete of the Week for Softball is Scarlette Chapman. As a sophomore and second year varsity player, Scarlette has earned first time Wesco league honors. She made the transition from playing first base last year to short stop and starting pitcher this year. Her batting average ended at .556 with 6 homeruns and 25 RBIs. On the mound, she produced 102 strikeouts. Scarlette continues to grow and improve each season. The coaches are excited to see what she does next year.
Kamiak Unified Basketball
Team Washington (AKA Kamiak Unified Basketball) are 5th in the Nation!!!

9th-11th Grade Textbook/Library Book Check-in
Next week is 9th-11th grade check-in of textbooks and library books during your English class. Click here to see the schedule. You can also stop by the Textbook or Library on your own time before or after school, during lunches, or passing periods to return your books. To see what you have checked out, log in to the Destiny catalog and click the "my info" tab.
Kamiak Laptop Return
Do you need to return your laptop before the end of the school year? If you are a senior who is graduating, a Mukilteo Virtual Academy student, or a student who does not plan to return to Kamiak next school year, then you need to return your laptop to the Library or Textbook room. You should keep your laptop until you no longer need it for classes and then return it during your scheduled textbook checkin time or on your own time before or after school.
Students in 9th-11th grades who plan to return to Kamiak next year will keep their laptops over the summer for use next school year. We will not collect these this year. Make sure to take good care of your laptop and keep it in a safe place where it will not get damaged.
ATTENDANCE REMINDERS FOR FAMILIES
PLEASE call or email ONE DAY IN ADVANCE (if possible) when you need your student dismissed early from school. Our campus is HUGE! We have multiple buildings with almost 2,400 students. Students may be off campus for aerobic walking, in one of two lunchrooms or in East Campus. We will get a pass to your student, they will sign out in Attendance and meet you at your vehicle in the roundabout at the time you indicate. Thank you for your help with this.
For ANY absence, please email (in your native language is fine) KAAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu or call 425-366-5460.
INCLUDE:
Student First and LAST NAME
DATE of absence
REASON for absence
TIME for dismissal (if applicable)
VOICEMAIL or EMAIL RESPONSE: We will only return your call or voicemail if we have questions but will always respond to email.
PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCES: please have your student pick up a pre-arranged absence form (#1 on the purple wall) in Attendance, fill it out in ink, have their teachers and parent/guardian sign it and return to Attendance. Each student is allowed 5 Excused pre-arranged absences per year.
SPRING ATHLETE REMINDER: Your student may NOT participate in practice or competition on a given day if they have ANY unexcused absence OR miss more than 3 periods of the day EVEN IF the absence is excused (exception: school-related absence such as class fieldtrip). Please note that if your student misses more than 25% of class, they will be marked with an Unexcused Absence rather than a tardy (i.e., depending on the day of the week and the class period, arriving more than 10-13 minutes into a class will be an unexcused absence). Visit the Athletics page for eligibility info or email the Athletic Department at KAAthletics@mukilteo.wednet.edu with athletics questions.

Tickets for Graduation
This year, Kamiak High School will hold the 2022 Graduation Ceremony at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, Washington. Like in years prior to the pandemic, we anticipate one ceremony on June 10th at 4pm. We also anticipate unlimited seating for the families coming to watch their seniors walk across the stage. This means you will not need tickets. But, recognizing the unpredictability of the COVID-19 Pandemic, things can change uncontrollably. We look to regular guidance from the Snohomish Health District, and will let our Kamiak community know if/when there is a change regarding our plans for Graduation.

Land Acknowledgement
We would like to begin by acknowledging that we gather on the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin since time immemorial. We respect this place and honor the sacred spiritual connection to the land, water, and its people, past, present, and future. By acknowledging these lands and their original Indigenous inhabitants, we reach back to our own indigeneity and reflect on the impacts of colonialism and the lands from which all our people come. We are connected to our ancestors through this connection to land, for the land is what connects us all. Please join me in expressing our deepest respect and gratitude to the traditional people of this territory, the Snohomish, and Tulalip Tribes, for their enduring care and protection of the land in which we currently share. If you would like to learn more about the local tribes or the affects of colonialism, click the link below! It contains links to organizations, petitions, and educational resources.
