2nd Grade Specials

NFS Curriculum Update :: May & June, 2015

Second grade artists will continue work on their Pop Art unit moving on from Andy Warhol to study the work of Roy Lichtenstein. We will draw inspiration from everyday things like sound and comics to create our own inspired characters full of emotion. Like Lichtenstein, we will be using dot pattens and vibrant colors, but each student will explore their own ideas.

Second Grade will finish reading European folk and fairy tales including Rumpelstiltskin and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. They will have a lesson in digital citizenship with Sarah Matthews, and finish the school year with a Readers’ Theater performance of Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed.

I have had such a wonderful time working with this second grade class. We will be finishing our jazz and musical theatre unit this month. We will also end the year singing some fun songs, playing instruments and dancing to the beat! Thank you for sharing your child with me this year!

We will spend much of this month preparing for Field Day. Students will be familiar with the activities prior to Field Day so they will be able to comfortably perform the required tasks. Following Field Day and weather permitting, we will go outside on the fields for outdoor games and activities. At the end of the school year the students will have the opportunity to choose a few of their favorite games and activities that were played during the year and repeat these activities one final time before the end of school.

Second graders continue their unit on Solids, Liquids, and Gases. We finish the year with our fun inquiry activity, Oobleck, which we will work on for several weeks. Oobleck is strange substance that acts like both a solid and a liquid. It is in fact a non-Newtonian liquid (a liquid that does not act like a liquid), but don’t tell them that. Students will create their own experiments and during the last week of school they will receive the much-anticipated recipe for Oobleck.

Second grade is finishing their “Todo Sobre Mí” Wixie projects and will be sharing them with you soon. We will end the year with a unit on food! Students will learn the names of foods in Spanish and the names for meals eaten throughout the day. We will work with “Me gusta” and “No me gusta” to express our likes and dislikes as it regards food items. As usual we will continue to practice responding to and asking basic conversational questions in Spanish.
