Mathematician's Corner
As mathematicians we have been using Borenson's Fraction Kit in order to gain conceptual understanding of fraction concepts. Throughout the unit these are the following concepts we have focused on :
- Recognizing Unit Fractions
- Comparing Fractions with the Same Denominator
- Adding Like Fractions
- Comparing fractions to 0, 1/2, 1
- Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
- Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions
- Adding Mixed Fractions
- Subtracting Mixed Fractions
- Forming Equivalent Fractions

FRACTIONS TEST ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10
Scientist's Corner
This week as Scientists we continued to discuss the difference between constructive and destructive forces and how both forces have an effect on Earth's landforms. Next week we will investigate watersheds. We will even get to engage in two water labs with our Resident Scientist Mrs. Umberger. Throughout our Unit of Study we will continue to realize the impact that humans have on oceans and landforms throughout our world.
Questions to Ask Students During Discussions about Science
- What are continental landforms and how are they formed?
- What happens when water flows over earth materials?
- What is weathering, erosion, and deposition?
Science Standards
- Indicator: 5.E.3B.1 Analyze and interpret data to describe and predict how natural processes (such as weathering, erosion, deposition, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, or storms) affect Earth’s surface.
- Indicator: 5.E.3A.1 Construct explanations of how different landforms and surface features result from the location and movement of water on Earth’s surface through watersheds (drainage basins) and rivers.
We also are beginning our Science Fair Unit of Study. This week students found out who would be in there groups. Next week, they are responsible for brainstorming potential topics and researching those topics. I'm very excited about the ideas students are already talking about!!
