Happy 14th Week of School!

Please read the district & campus news below. As always, let me know if you have any questions or would like to meet.

ELAR

Reading Aloud: This is a wonderful article about the power of reading aloud! What connections do you make with this article? ‘Reading aloud binds us together in unanticipated ways’

"Reading together can happen in a living room or a dining room or in a back yard, in a classroom or in a car or in a Florida room on a wrought-iron couch. Within the confines of a story shared aloud, we get to see one another in new ways. Our hearts are open to the story and open to one another — and because of this, some kind of subterranean magic occurs. Reading aloud binds us together in unanticipated ways.

It brings us home."

Typical Reading Levels: This document is meant to be used as a guide only. If you are unsure about moving a student to the next reading level, please seek guidance from your team or from me. Two things to remember:

  1. Students should not be moved through levels simply because they can read accurately. It is important to assess their comprehension skills, as well. Students can continue to work in a particular level range while they learn how to think beyond the text and think about the text (info found in The Continuum of Literacy Learning). Nonfiction texts are a great place to go with these students.
  2. Students can move to a higher level when ready, even if it is not within the typical level range. Small group reading is the time to truly meet the individual needs of our students. Don’t worry about running out of books in the guided reading library. Texts can be pulled from other resources, such as Time for Kids, ReadWorks, or The Comprehension Toolkit. I would be happy to help you find additional texts for your groups!
