Stone Bank School

Reaching Out ~ February 19, 2016

From the Principal

Happy February! We're well into the third quarter of our school year! What fun it has been watching your children learn and grow every day!

February has been a particularly busy month here at Stone Bank. Many parents have graciously offered their time to help out. Thank you to the room parents that helped out with the Valentine's Day parties. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend our annual spelling bee to support all of our contestants. Finally, Thank You to all of the parents who were able to attend conferences on February 18th and 19th. Your partnership in your child's learning is greatly valued and appreciated.

Towards the end of March, students in grades 3-8 will take the Wisconsin Forward Exam (this exam replaces the Badger Test and the WKCE). All students will take the English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math tests. Students in grades 4 and 8 will also take the Science and Social Studies tests. During the ELA test, the students will need earbuds or headphones. Please take a moment to confirm whether or not your child still has the earbuds that were purchased as part of their school supplies last fall. More information about exact dates and testing times will be shared closer to the dates.

Annual Spelling Bee

The Stone Bank Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, February 11th. Congratulations to all 33 students who competed. All the students displayed their best effort. The runner up of the Stone Bank Spelling Bee was 6th grader, Aidan Jacobsen and the champion was 5th grader, Wade Lindmark. Wade will go on to the regional competition on Monday, February 22nd at CESA #1 to compete with 8 other schools. The regional champion will then compete on Friday, March 18th, at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin. Best of luck to Wade.

Open Enrollement

For those of you who have children currently attending Stone Bank School under the Open Enrollment Program, this is just a reminder that you do not need to re-apply each year. Your child may continue to attend Stone Bank School through 8th grade. If you would like your child to attend Arrowhead High School rather than your resident district high school, you will need to apply for Open Enrollment during the open enrollment period of February through April in your child’s 8th grade year. Please remember that while your child is open enrolled into Stone Bank at any time it is very important that you notify the office of any address changes. If you have any questions regarding Open Enrollment, please contact Kristin Magnuson at 966-2900 x4010

Jump Rope for Heart

During the week of February 8th-12th, students in Kindergarten through 5th grade participated in Jump Rope for Heart in their gym classes. They set goals for themselves and worked on improving their jump rope skills and stamina. They also learned about the human heart, heart health, and taking care of each others' "hearts" by being kind. Students had the opportunity to raise money to support the American Heart Association (AHA) through this event. Our students did a fantastic job by raising over $6000 and helping to save lives! Congratulations Stone Bank Students, and thank you to all the families who donated and/or helped your child collect donations. You are truly "Heart Heroes!"

Parents United

Parents United is a non-profit consortium of 21 special education departments that have joined to provide an educational community service. The mission of the group is to present timely and relevant information in a neutral forum for parents and professionals who work with children. The lectures and presentations offered each school year provide links, knowledge and networking to the community for the ultimate benefit of our students. The attached link is for the upcoming presentation:

Project Linus

March 2nd the Student Council groups will be hosting our after school Project Linus Service event and an all school "Pajama Day" (pajamas must be school appropriate and shoes must be worn). Project Linus is open to students who wish to participate in making blankets. We will meet after school from 2:30pm - 4:00pm in the library. If your child is planning on participating, please let the office know that they will be in attendance. If your child attends after school Y-care, please let Y-care know as well that they will be participating in Project Linus and will be finished by 4:00pm. If they are attending Y-care after the event, we will see that they are placed where they need to be. We are in need of donations, please send it to the school office. 1 ½ yards make excellent blankets for young children. We thank you in advance for your donations.

Lake Country Publications Writing Contest

Lake Country Publications is once again sponsoring its annual student writing contest. This year’s contest asks students to imagine life as a superhero. Check out the attached flier for more details.

Winners in two age categories will receive cash prizes and will see their work published in our newspapers. We think you’ll agree that this is a great way to encourage students to exercise their creativity and writing skills.
