Signs and symptoms
Signs and symptoms of this syndrome includes dry skin, dry eyes, and dry mouth. This syndrome can also lead to arthritis and chronic bronchitis. The syndrome also includes fatigue ans inflammation of the mouth.
Pathogenesis
B cells and plasma cells cause glandular dysfunction. The loss of exocrine glands can also cause this syndrome.
Diagnosis
Blood tests are done to determine the levels of antibodies. The Rose Bengal test is also done to determine the lacrimal gland levels. The Schrimer's test is also done to measure the production of tears.
Management
There is no treatment for this syndrome. Patients are usually given moisture replacement therapies. Patients are also given medicine that can calm the symptoms.
Prognosis
The future for this syndrome can vary. Some patients symptoms decrease and others increase. Sjorgen's may damage vital organs of the body, it can also lead to blurred vision, and trouble swallowing and eating.
Epidemiology
It is the second most videly rheumatic autoimmune disorder. It appears in women more than in men. The syndrome can occur at any age, but it mostly occurs in the 40s to 60s.
