Ralph Downs Elementary - March 27th
The next few weeks in PE...
Kinder, 1st & 2nd - Our littles will be working on their team building skills along with over arm throwing and aiming at targets when they play Angry Birds. They will also participate in gymnastics focusing on the forward roll, cartwheel, piggy back, table, backward roll, shoulder wheelbarrow, head stand and tripod.
3rd, 4th & 5th - The older grades will be outside participating in track and field. Our track module consists of 8 events, these include; 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long jump, softball throw and tug-0f-war. The 400m and 800m are both optional events. The times logged for 4th and 5th grade will be used to select our track team for the track meet in May.
Tennis / Athletic shoes
Tennis / Athletic shoes are preferred in PE for both safety and comfort. It's really hard to run, play and join in activities in high heels, boots and flip flops.
Water
H20 is the way to go. Students are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle (with a lid) to PE. The recommended daily allowance is 8 glasses of water, more if you are exercising
Athletic Clothing
Loose comfortable clothing that allows free movement is recommended. Shorts, t-shirts, track pants etc are perfect for the gym.
Mrs. Holman's Class putting their own salad together
Did you know that kids are 80% more likely to eat veggies they have grown and harvested themselves? That's exactly what's happening here. Last Friday Mrs. Holman's class made their own salad with fresh veggies harvested from the tower garden. Their salads included spinach, lettuce, kale, basil and cilantro. More than half of them chose to dress their salad with a healthy zesty Italian dressing rather than ranch. Great job fueling up 1st grade!!

Lovely looking salad guys!
PEDOMETERS IN PE
3rd, 4th and 5th graders will continue to wear pedometers during PE class. These pedometers are pretty cool, they track steps, activity time and time in heart rate zone. After class students download their pedometers to my laptop which keeps track of both their individual and class steps over the month. A leader board will be posted outside the gym for the top steppers! The kids loved this last semester and worked really hard to achieve their goals
And the TOP STEPPERS for Feb are....
MRS. UNRUH'S CLASS won the month of February. They all enjoyed snow cones in the garden area as their reward! Great job 4th graders...
BUY YOUR OWN SET OF SPEED STACKS
Speed stacking has been super popular so we are carrying it on in to this week. Some of the students are wanting to purchase their own stack. Here's a link to the cheapest set I've found. (Amazon $19.99)
Cosmic Kids yoga is always a hit, try it at home too.

Every great gym has a library right?
Take a book, leave a book. The free library in the gym is stocked and ready to go. Here's how it works; students bring a book from home, it has to be their own book and one that they are ok trading. Students place their book in the donation basket and take a brand new book from the bookshelf. This is the third year for the gym library and it's been a great success. Bring a an old book and go home with a brand new book to read, recycling at its best.
