Message from Dr. Connery
Dear Simpson families,
Happy March! It was wonderful to see over 350 parents and guests attend last Friday's awesome PTA Fundraiser, Simpson's Got Talent! I had a wonderful time watching amazing comedians, dancers, and musical performers support FurKids (a local animal shelter) and raised approximately $1, 500 dollars! If you want to see a sneak peak video of Dr. Connery and some of your outstanding teachers get in on the last surprising act, please follow us via our new Twitter App at Simpson Superstars_PTC (see additional details below)! Also, I had a wonderful time cheering on our Readers Rally Participants last month at Peachtree Ridge HS. Our Simpson Superstars came in 3rd Place in our division! Congratulations to the following students for your dedicated practice and performance. Abhinav G. Jason K. Alyssa C. Taylor Y. Peace W. Lyla W. Vincent P. Yusef I. Anna H. Valentina C.
I will be looking forward to another awesome competition next year. Finally, please help me extend congratulations to two of our STEM Superstars, Barrett O (4th) and Benjamin M (4th), for their winning project on Elementary School Problem #5, Protecting Georgia's Pollinators, at the Gwinnett County Science Engineering and Innovation Fair last month. Barrett and Benjamin used the Engineering Design Process to create an efficient and cost-effective solution that homeowners can use to protect pollinators in Georgia. Thank you to ALL of our parents, staff, and students for making Simpson Elementary such a great place to learn! Have a wonderful month, and as always, don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance.
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Connery

Georgia Milestones Assessment System
The Georgia Milestones is a comprehensive summative assessment program for grades 3 through 5th. The Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the curriculum standards in the core content areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. It is designed to provide information about student achievement and readiness to move on to the next level. The assessment window will open from April 7th to April 27th.

Home Alone Guidelines
We often have parents contact us to ask about the guidelines for when children can be home alone or can be babysitters. The Department of Family and Children's Services (DFCS) has established the following guidelines:
- Children (8) eight years or younger should not be left alone.
- Children between the ages of (9) nine years and (12) twelve years, based on level of maturity, may be left alone for brief (less than two hours) periods of time.
- Children (13) thirteen years and older, who are at an adequate level of maturity, may be left alone and may perform the role of babysitter, as authorized by the parent, for up to twelve hours.
How do I know if my child is ready to be left home alone? If your child is 9 years and older (and mature), consider:
1. Does the child know the family emergency plan?
2. Does he/she have access to a phone to call for help? Do they know the parents' cell and work numbers and can recite them?
3. What is the availability of the parent while the child is home alone? Can they get home quickly in an emergency?
4. Are there factors that reduce risk such as supportive/available neighbors?
5. Does the child feel comfortable being left alone for a short period of time?
