Every Moment Counts: Promoting Participation and Health Throughout the Day
Description:
Every Moment Counts is a multi-pronged mental health promotion initiative that focuses on helping all children and youth participate in and enjoy activities throughout the school day in inclusive classroom, lunchroom, recess, and after-school leisure settings. Participants will learn about a multi-tiered public health approach to health (mental and physical) involving promotion, prevention, and intervention and how to implement innovative activity-based programs and embedded strategies - Comfortable Cafeteria, Refreshing Recess, Calm Moments Cards, and Making Leisure Matter. Research confirms that positive interactions and experiences (e.g., enjoying lunch, having fun during recess) help children feel positive and connected to school. Strategies for how to implement integrated services to promote successful participation in academics, social interaction, mealtimes, play/recess, and after-school leisure will be described. Practical examples of collaborative services (OT, PT, SLP, teachers) integrated in academic (classroom) and non-academic (cafeteria, recess, art, etc.) settings will be shared. Creative strategies for helping youth participate in meaningful, community-based leisure will be provided. The building capacity process, involving knowledge translation within a community of practitioners, will also be described as a way to develop school-based change leaders - those with the knowledge and confidence empowered to change practice based on current evidence.
