Catching up with Comets ~ Andrew Nutter
This is a section where we would like to showcase and highlight the wonderful things Genoa graduates are doing in their selective career fields. The college and career ready component is something that Genoa high school is striving to focus on as we prepare students for a future. We hope that these thoughts and highlights shared will help spread some wisdom obtained by Genoa high school past graduates. This week, we will spotlight, Andrew Nutter a 2012 graduate.
What was one good memory from high school that students today may enjoy hearing from your high school days?
In Mrs. Richards physics class, my classmates Taylor Darling, Trevor McLargin and I built the biggest cardboard boat in her classes history. It all started when she approved our original design, and then later disqualified our boat because some students complained about it(I was her neighbor in high school so she came over and saw our original boat and was fine with it, until kids complained). After she disqualified our boat I told her, “Ok, now we are going to build a boat that brakes all the rules.” We were really mad at her so we didn’t follow any of the guidelines, and made a boat that I believe we calculated could hold about 1500lbs. We were able to fit I think 9 people on the boat after we already paddled around the pond, but Trevor put a hole on the side so it ended up breaking apart. Mrs. Richards still plays the video of it in physics last I heard!
After high school what path led you to where you are today? (After HS until Today)
Since freshman year I wanted to be an actuary, but changed my mind 3 months before I graduated high school and decided to go into Finance to manage money. I decided to go to the University of Toledo when I saw their trading floor and they told me about their student managed portfolio team that managed part of the endowment of the University. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I graduated Magna Cum Laude, BBS major in Finance(focus in Investment Management), minored in sales, entrepreneurship, Family and small business. My experience managing money of the schools endowment was so valuable. I also worked at a financial services company the entire time I was in college, which luckily produced a relationship with my now current partner that I manage money with. I am currently Co-managing money for 4 financial advisors, totaling around 280 households, equaling about $75 million of Assets under Management.
What are your plans for the future?
Keep doing what I’m doing. I’m a part owner in a company that allows me to do what I want to do, when I want to do it, and who I want to do it with. Where else could I go that gives me the same opportunity? I have no boss. I study, research, and invest money(exactly what I want to do.) I can work whenever I want; sometimes at night, at home, maybe take the whole week off just because. I can work on vacation even. I love my career, which is why I tried so hard to entire into it.
What would be one word of advice that you have for high school students now at Genoa?
Self-discipline! If you can’t exercise self discipline you can’t accomplish any long term goal you set for yourself. Success comes from consistent improvement over long periods of time. That can’t happen if someone can’t Focus on a task and do it through good and bad times.
