Family Update

Week of March 20, 2022

Academy of St. Benedict the African - Week of March 20th.

Spring Arrives!

Good morning,

The video included before this section will highlight the main points of the update.

This week Spring officially arrives! We had a little taste of spring weather this past week and it was glorious. Seeing and hearing the joyful voices of our students as they played was good for the soul! All students should be wearing gym shoes every day. Tuesday is a Kind Shirt Day!

This Friday (3/25) is a no school day for students as our teachers have professional learning. We are offering childcare for our families at no additional cost. Care is available from 7:30-4:30 pm. Just complete this form: https://forms.gle/TkBUurYkJeKS3Zzx7 This is the last professional learning day of the year.

Have you registered your child/ren yet? Fill out the form today to hold the space! The fee to register will be taken care of later. We have 115 students registered. We will go to waiting lists. Please complete this form! Don't worry about the payment right now. Many families are receiving notification of tax credit scholarships for next year from both Empower Illinois and Big Shoulders Fund. Be sure to keep an eye on your emails.

Do you have a family to refer? You can receive a $300 tuition credit for next year plus receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card for each student registered before April 15th! See details below!

It's also time to register for our five-week summer program. Students entering PK3 - 5th grade in August are welcomed. Families with AFC/Childcare will pay their copay for the program along with any field trip fees. See me or the business office to find out more about the fees.

Students in grades 3-8 who have tax credit scholarships this year will begin the required IAR testing this week.

We are working very hard to keep the school free of COVID to the best of our ability. With that said, our families must partner with us by not sending any students to school who have ANY symptoms. We will send home students with runny noses, headaches, sore throats, and/or coughs. If your child has seasonal allergies, please get a note from the doctor for us and take a home test. We are mask optional. We will have masks and offer them, but we do not expect nor insist students or staff wear them. That's a family decision.

  • FOLLOW THE DRESS & UNIFORM CODE: Hoodies and sweatshirts that are not part of the school uniform are not allowed during the school day. Please have your child wear their school hoodie, school gym sweatshirt, or a plain navy blue sweater if they're cold during the day. Please see the school uniform/dress code in our family handbook. We believe that excellence happens on purpose. Lessening distractions of being out of uniform is one way we foster that excellence. We still have light blue hoodies in all sizes and some navy blue hoodies.

  • Students should not have nail polish, artificial nails, any jewelry, or smartwatches. Students do NOT need their cell phones at school. They are kept in the office all day. - This is becoming an issue and it's distracting from learning. Students will be receiving notices. Following the rules and expectations is required at St. Benedict.

  • Please be sure to check the "Save the Date" section below.

  • Do you have clothes and shoes your family has outgrown, don't wear, or don't want? We have a clothes and shoes collection box in the parking lot! The school receives $0.02/lb and a tree is planted in our honor each time it's emptied. We are the stewards of God's beautiful earth. This is one way we help!

  • The school office is open Monday through Friday 6:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Our amazing office staff can take payments, sell hoodies and polos and answer questions. After 3:30, please leave a message on the mainline or dial 101 at the recording to be connected to my extension. If you need extended day after 3:30, dial 107 at the voicemail message.

Thank you for trusting us with your child/ren. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Parents do not need to be present; consent forms are below. Please register at https://getvaxchi.chicago.gov/ the code, as this is a private event is benedict.

For students entering Kindergarten and sixth grade, there are required immunizations. This is a great opportunity to take care of it now!

If students receive a COVID vaccine, the second dose is scheduled for 6/7 at school, too!

Amazon Gift Cards for Referrals!

In partnership with the Big Shoulders Fund, we have a special incentive for current families who refer families to us for next year. For each student referred and registered (forms and fees completed), the referring family will receive a $50 Amazon card. So if you refer a family with 2 students, they complete the forms and pay the $50/each registration fee, you will receive $100 in Amazon cards. This promotion runs through April 15th! We recognize that our current families are our best marketers! Thank you!

2022-2023 Financial Contracts and Forms

Financial Contracts for next year along with the required forms will be sent home during March and April for all families that have registered. This will be done through the email we have on record. A group of contracts will be going out this week.

The contract will be written without carrying over any part of the 21-22 contract. In June and July, if necessary, we will make updates.

Please be sure that the phone number and emails we have on Powerschool are accurate.

Tuition Payments - Please call the office with concerns.

Tuition payments for our families are due on either the 17th or 30th of the month for most families. Please make your payments in a timely fashion. Payments can be made through the family's FACTS account, using the donate button on our website (academystbenedict.org), using the payment button on the school mobile app, or in the office. We do accept debit/credit, money orders, cash (exact please), and Apple/Samsung Pay.

Families with Income Tax agreements are expected to make that payment this month. Please let the business office know if there is a problem.

Volunteering in School

In order to volunteer in school, adults over the age of 18 must attend Virtus Training, complete a background check, and complete mandated reporter training. These are requirements of the Archdiocese of Chicago to keep all children safe.

Go to https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/ to register for an online class and consent to the background check. Please see or email Ms. Fernandez (mfernandez@academystbenedict.org) if you need assistance or have a question.
