A Message from Mrs. Austin, Principal
The school year is quickly approaching, and we are diligently planning and preparing for Monday, August 31st. Please remember that there are lots of moving parts to opening the school year virtually and we are working hard to share necessary information as quickly as possible. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards for a positive full virtual model. There will be no shortage of opportunities for your student to feel challenged on a daily basis with high quality instruction and have a wide variety of options to get connected to their school and fellow students.
At the beginning of next week, you will receive a letter in the mail that shares your child's homeroom teacher and class schedule. You can expect synchronous (live face to face) instruction in ELA, Math, Social Studies/Science (3 days a week), PATHS (Social Emotional Learning- 2 days a week) as well as Art, Music, PE, and Media.
Teachers are excited to invite students and parents to a Virtual Meet the Teacher Session on Friday, August 28th at 3 pm or 4 pm (pick one time). You will learn more about the teacher, the virtual platform- Schoology, curriculum and classroom expectations.
Additional information regarding the start of the school year including curriculum materials and technology deployment will be shared in the near future via Find Out First. I am in the office Monday-Thursday from 8 am-4 pm. Please contact me directly by phone (240-236-1900) or e-mail (dana.austin@fcps.org) with questions and/or needs.
- Dana Austin, Proud Principal of Myersville Elementary
Student Planning Profile
Sent via Find Out First on Monday 8.10.20.
For the upcoming school year, we need you to complete a student planning profile for each child that will attend Myersville Elementary School.
To access Myersville Elementary School's Student Planning Profile, click on the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MYES-RegIntent
This information is critical to adequately prepare for your child's instruction. You must complete one profile for each child that is enrolled in an FCPS school. If you have children in another FCPS school, you will receive communication from that school with a different link.
Please complete this profile by Monday, August 17.

Foundational Reading Instruction
I am pleased to announce that MYES will begin to use new reading materials this school year called Phonics Suite in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2. These materials are designed to improve students' understanding of foundational reading skills, including phonics. These materials will be used in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade, and will be one part of your child's overall reading program. Students will still have small group instruction, be exposed to literature, and build oral language skills. The Phonics Suite programs are designed to be very systematic and explicit and this will build students’ mastery of these critical reading skills.
PATHS
Frederick County Public Schools is pleased to share that we are implementing a curriculum to support social emotional learning in all elementary classes at MYES in the 2020-2021 school year. Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS) is the curriculum chosen for use in our school.
Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important part of each student’s healthy development. PATHS will teach SEL skills to help students succeed in school and life. SEL skills include handling emotions constructively, behaving responsibly, making good decisions, and developing caring, positive relationships. SEL contributes to a positive school climate, improvements in academic achievement, and reductions in bullying behavior.
The PATHS program teaches and reinforces many key aspects of SEL, shown through research to improve behavior, reduce conflict and improve academics. One FCPS elementary school used the program last year to support an overall focus on developing the whole child. It resulted in students’ increased attention in the classroom, increased ability to organize thoughts, improved behavior, and better use of conflict-resolution strategies.
MYES Vision Statement
Myersville Elementary is a place where students and staff are engaged learners. They feel safe to take risks and all contributions are valued. Here we have fun while we learn in our school community.
