FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School :: October 6th, 2014
The FHS is a monthly on-line school newsletter. It will be emailed to you through School Reach. There will be weekly reminders of important events and activities that are planned for the upcoming week.
OLQHS 2014 Heavenly Fish Fest
Dear Parents and Members of the OLQHS Community
Carline is going well for the most part. I want to thank you for following the new design. Please remember if you are walking your Pre-k or Kindergarten child to their classroom, park in the church parking lot. If you park along Quilty Street, you interfere with carline and someone is going to be hurt. Also, middle school parents please, follow the signs when turning back on to West Claude Street. If you are in the right lane, you must go right. If you are in the left lane, you must turn left back on to W. Claude St. back towards Lake St. The school has received calls from the neighbors about blocking driveways; please do not block the driveways on Creole Street or Kingston Street. Thank you so much.
This past month we lost an important person from the OLQHS family, Chrissie Carlsen Gillett. Chrissie was a wonderful asset to our Kindergarten program and the entire school. I keep remembering the first time I met Chrissie. It was at the end of the first year I was here and we needed to replace the aide who was leaving. The teachers and I interviewed 12 individuals and we were tired and ready to go home until the 13th interviewee walked through the door, Chrissie. She woke us up and we knew right away this was who we wanted and what OLQHS needed. The OLQHS Community gathered together as always to help Chrissie’s family get through this difficult time. Chrissie’s children, Josh and Isabelle, are doing well. The school will make sure that they will remain at OLQHS. We continue to pray for Chrissie, her family, and the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Community who all suffered such a great loss.
The Heavenly Fish Fest was a great event. It was a picture perfect day. The children caught fish, everyone ate fish and chips, the prizes were plentiful, the community gathered together, and everything was cleanup and put away in 20 minutes. OLQHS is truly an in creditable place to be.
The grading scale has changed this year. The thought behind the change is to be more in line with St. Louis’s and with the public schools. The purpose of grading is to measure a student’s academic progression.
The Grading scale is now:
A 100-93 Outstanding
B 92 -85 Very Good
C 84-77 Good
D 76 -70 Weak
E 69 -0 Not fulfilling requirements
As our students move up the different grade levels, it is important to allow them to take more and more responsibility for their own learning.
OLQHS is an incredible place to be.

Instant Wisdom
Mental Math
Mental math: Calculations that are done in a student's head without the guidance of pencil and paper, calculators or other aids. Mental math is often used as a way to calculate and estimate quickly, using math facts that a student has committed to memory, such as multiplication, division or doubles facts.
Students with good Number Sense are usually good at mental math.
Caught You Being Good this week at OLQHS!! Let’s Celebrate!
- Katalina Daley has been shelving books in the library every Friday afternoon, so the cart is empty for the weekend.
- Grant Evans moved from his table full of friends to sit with a classmate who was eating alone.
- Mary Claire Groves, Hank Milligan, and Ethan Eisen have been especially helpful to a classmate who sometimes needs an extra hand.
- These 5th graders were caught picking up trash on the playground Friday, Sept 26. A big thanks goes to Leah Begnaud, Tyler Tran, Gracie Green, Emily Booth, Taylor Langley, Jason Manuel.
- Lucy Kennison bought two spirit ribbons and gave one to a little boy and even told him that she hoped he would win! (Michelle Carrier’s Class)
- Alayna Eisner caught being good by offering encouraging words to one of her classmates.

Excellent Attendance
Being in school everyday means your child won’t miss out on learning. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours. If he asks to stay home “just because,” remind him/her of what he’ll miss, such as his reading group or art class. Explain that he can be absent only if he’s sick or if there’s a family emergency.
New Crosses for Classrooms
The school is in the process of buying new crosses for the classrooms in the new building. The Bishop will bless them at the dedication on October 23, 2014. We looked and looked for something beautiful and appropriate. If you would like to donate a cross to a classroom, please contact the main office and ask for Mrs. Jackson.
The Art World
The Art Students have started off doing wonderful things this year. I am so proud of their performances in the classroom. I want to make a “shout out” to Mrs. Posch’s 3rd Grade Art Class, who has been “caught being good” several weeks in a row. Good Job!!!
We are starting out our year with four students already in the Artsonia Hall of Fame. These students have received their certificate, their candy, and their names in the Fine Arts Building “Hall of Fame”. The students are Avery Crigger in Kindergarten, First Graders Carson Kramer and Keelan McCall, and Fourth Grader Caroline Ritchie. Congratulations!!
Kindergarten students have learned about lines (spiders), drawn a self portrait, and are learning about warm and cool colors. First graders have drawn Mickey Mouse, their self portrait, the American Flag, and are now making lovely flowers in a vase. Second Graders learned about the six basic shapes, drew dinosaurs, and are now learning the proper way to draw trees. You should see their trees!
Third Graders have drawn Shoes for the “Rocking In My School Shoes” display in the Library and Fine Arts Building. They have also learned about Formal, Informal, and Radial Designs in their compositions and learned to draw some Creepy Crawlies (Japanese Beetles, Stink Bugs, and Snails). Their next project is to learn to draw roses for their Mary of Guadalupe.
Fourth Graders drew Pete the Cat for the “Rocking in My School Shoes” Project, learned how to color a Celtic Knot, and are now in the process of painting their Christmas Gourd Ornament. Fifth Graders learn how to draw exactly what they see by looking at upside down pictures of cartoon characters and drawing them upside down. They also drew and colored (with cray pas) beautiful gecko lizards which are crawling around the walls in my hall. Next project is Monster Drawing. Each student has to draw the scariest original monster they can think of and color with Prismacolor Pencil Colors.
Seventh Graders have drawn some of the Great Masters and are now creating an original work—“Angel of Peace”. It is a judged contest and the winner’s picture will be on the cover of OLQH’s Advent Card. What an honor!!
Eighth Graders have drawn some of the Great Masters as well, and are now designing and painting their own free standing Santa Gourd. They are going to be Fabulous!!
At OLQH our Art Students are having fun, creating, and making messes—but mostly, having FUN.
Thank for all of your support,
Brenda Foshee, Art

OLQH Advanc-ed/SACS Evaluation set for Spring 2015
It has already been five years since the Advanc-ed Quality Assurance Team evaluated our school. They will be returning in March of 2015 to evaluate OLQH once again.
The evaluation procedure has changed quite a bit since they last came, but the process by which we look at our school remains much the same. We will perform a self study based on the following standards:
Standard 1—Vision and Purpose—team leader—Mrs. JoAnn Wallwork
Standard 2—Governance and Leadership—team leader---Kelly Babineaux
Standard 3—Teaching and Learning—team leaders—Adrienne Zembower and Tina Fink
Standard 4—Resources and Support Systems---team leader—Jane Piraro
Standard 5—Using Results for Continuous Improvement—team leader—Chris Crosby
Throughout the year we will be asking parents, students, teachers, grandparents and community member to provide us with feedback. This may be in the form of a survey, stakeholder meeting, interviews…etc… Please be open to accepting these invitations. Our team will guide you through this process.
Your input is vital in assuring that Our Lady Queen of Heaven school continues to move forward and provide the best education possible for the children entrusted to us.
Thank you,
Kelly Babineaux
