The Bangladesh War
by Kailyn Tinberg
Bangladesh gained victory on December 16, 1971, creating the first Bengali republic. The 9-month long war caused somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 deaths. The war erupted in March 1971, caused by elections. They were won by an East Pakistani party, the Awami League, which wanted independence for their area. The supporters of the party started to attack many non-Bangali citizens and things began to get even more violent.
