Week of January 11th-15th

Classroom Happenings

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Happy New Year! It has been so fun listening to students talk about all of the fun stuff they did over break! I hope you all had a restful and joyful holiday!

Scholastic Book Orders:

The January Scholastic Book Orders went home today. As I looked through them, I noticed that a lot of new books have been added! If you are interested in ordering online, please visit: scholastic.com/readingclub and use our class activation code: NG6FZ. You can also get books by filling out the order form and including a check made out to Scholastic Reading Club. All orders are due by Friday, January 22nd. Happy ordering! :)

Student Council:

Our Student Council is sponsoring The Pet Project which will benefit the Porter County Animal Shelter. The project will run from Monday, January 11th until Friday, January 29th. Items we are looking for include:

  • old towels
  • pet food
  • pet shampoo
  • collars
  • kitty litter
  • toys
  • old pet crates
  • leashes
  • paper towels
  • puppy pad

  • Accelerated Reader will count as two test scores this grading period. One grade will be for reaching the point goal. The other will be for reading comprehension accuracy. Students have until Monday, January 11th to take AR quizzes.

To finish our unit on forces, we will read about and discuss friction and gravity. On Tuesday, students will receive a study guide for unit 3. They will work on it with their table groups, and we will review answers before the end of class. A review game will be played on Wednesday and the test will be on Thursday.

Here is a list of topics students need to be familiar with:

  • force and its ability to change motion
  • kinds of motion
  • speed
  • friction
  • gravity

Social Studies

We are taking a break from social studies. We will pick it up again in March.

We are continuing to work on division using our colored tile pieces. The standard algorithm for division will also be introduced.

During week 2 of our unit, we will be using trickster tales to help us review and practice the following skills:
  • Comparing and Contrasting
  • Determining Text Importance

We will be diving into the different parts of an essay (introduction, body, and conclusion) and discussing how to make each part strong.

Spelling: Schwa + r spelled er, ir, ur

Students will be tested over all 10 Core Words. Then, I will choose 10 of the Test Words to give them on Friday. For the last word, students have to write the sentence that I say using the spelling word. I take a writing score for their sentence based on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
