Below is a lesson framework to help you view the Workshop Model in its entirety. The key components of the model are listed along the side in the gray boxes. In the white boxes there are key questions within each Workshop Model component aligned to the Marzano elements. We hope you find this framework helpful to guide your instructional planning. • Cold Calling is a technique that creates an expectation that all students are ready to answer every question. This promotes attention, engagement and participation.

The teacher nearly always selects who should respond next by name. No hands up; no calling out – it could be anyone. This is the norm. Students all anticipate being asked to respond, sharing their thoughts; everyone mentally prepares an answer to every question in readiness for being selected. They are all involved. Nobody dominates. Over time, everyone contributes. Questions are addressed to the whole class followed by a pause and then…. Michael, what were you thinking? Safia, what answer did you get? Shafiq, how did you explain it? Thinking is required from everyone; everyone is included.
