An Overview of My Perspectives
MyPerspective Textbooks: Introduction (from Pearson)
"myPerspectives is a brand new English language arts curriculum for Grades 6–12 that values the perspective of the learner, collectively and individually, and provides next-gen learning experiences that promote higher achievement and develop the competencies needed for college and career readiness. Interactive learning blends print and technology in a student-centered, teacher-inspired classroom."
Engages Next-Gen Learners
How do you make a 400-year old text relevant? Tie in media, blogs, films, and multimedia. Have debates, explore a graphic novel! myPerspectives connects to 21st century learners in profound ways. "Increasing student engagement increases achievement."
- Multimedia resources
- Multiple means of expression: oral and written assessments
Create a Student-Centered Learning Environment
myPerspectives creates a teacher-led, student-centered classroom. The literature gets students excited to read and respond through conversations and writing. The teacher models concepts for the class, then students collaborate in smaller groups on specific tasks. Next, students complete independent work and come back and share their learning. This framework supports and challenges students to become collaborative and self-directed learners.
(See examples in your text-- flip open to the Unit 1 sticky-note. As a whole department, discuss the progression of the unit. This model will be followed for ALL units.)
Make Performance-Based Tasks Part of Learning
Knowing and using skills are an integral part of myPerspectives. The program is backward designed from standards-based learning outcomes. All activities, instruction, and assessments contribute to students demonstrating their learning in response to an achievable performance-based assessment. Students integrate the knowledge they acquired, apply critical thinking skills, cite evidence, and use effective expression to respond to a complex multi-step writing and/or speaking and listening task.
- Aligned to CCSS
- Inquiry-based student-led tasks
- Scaffolding throughout the unit leads to cumulative independent task

Quick Notes from Michelle
- In middle school, the textbook and related materials are for the ELA block of OGL only. Accelerated students will use Springboard during the ELA block. The format of Lit Lab will not change (reading extended texts, working on writing).
- Some changes will need to be made to re-align our current resources to the new textbook units (for example-- the topic of the Holocaust moves to Grade 8 and Romeo and Juliet goes back to CM/Academic level ELA).
- Each school will pick TWO trade books per student to order as part of our new textbook package (see trade book list).
- Note: We can actually get as many titles per grade as we want as long as we don't go over the total number (for example, you might want to set up literature circles in one unit and only order 50 copies of 8 titles as opposed to entire class set of one novel).
