A Message from Dr. Bearden
Kindness Week:
The Great Kindness Challenge at SHE included a Kindness Tunnel for community heroes/helpers. Kindness activities were all coordinated by our wonderful school counselor, Ruth Bowen. We had 35-40 people to visit SHE and walk down the Kindness Tunnel. Students lined the halls, with handmade signs, and cheered as the local heroes/helpers walked down the hall. Thank you to Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood, Milton City Council Members, Milton PD, Milton Fire Dept., FCS Police Dept., and other community heroes/helpers, who made this event so special for our children. We were so excited to learn that WSB-TV and USA Today picked up a Milton PD post on Facebook. The links to those two videos are: USA Today Link and WSB-TV Link to SHE Kindness Tunnel. We have also heard from The Milton Herald about publishing our Kindness Tunnel. Group Pic 1
Teacher Appreciation Week:
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! For all of your kindness to SHE staff during Teacher Appreciation Week! Lunches, Supplies, Flowers, Gifts, etc. This is HANDS-DOWN the BEST and MOST GENEROUS community! Family and students' gifts of love have touched us all, we feel appreciated, and APPRECIATE you, too!!
A NEW Video Book Read by Dr. Bearden: The Bravest Worrier
Reading aloud to children is such an important way to help children become stronger readers. At SHE we are working to build a collection of books read out loud by staff members. The link above will allow your child to hear the book "The Bravest Worrier", which is read by me. I hope your child(ren) enjoy the book.
Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students): This national organization (www.dadsofgreatstudents.com) is in its 2nd year at SHE and we LOVE it! If you are a dad of great students (or grandfather, uncle, and/or any male relative at least 21 yrs), we encourage you to volunteer to spend a day at SHE. For more information about how to volunteer, contact: Jim Dwyer, jbkdwyer@gmail.com, or Mendy Hughes, mendyhughes97@yahoo.com
GADOE Climate Survey for Parents:
Attention parents! We need your feedback! Please complete the short survey from the Georgia Department of Education on school climate. Your important feedback is a vital part of our School Climate Star Rating at Summit Hill. The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, March 6th. http://gshs.gadoe.org/parents
FLU INFORMATION FROM FCS:
The flu season is extended for the state of Georgia and school children are especially at risk for the flu. Click FLU UPDATE for the latest message from FCS, which contains helpful tips for families! Stay well and wash, wash, wash your hands... We are sanitizing the classroom surfaces each and every day. Parent Letter
If your child misses school due to sickness, even if you do not visit the doctor, please send a note to your teacher so that we can excuse the absence.
Wildly Attainable Goal Setting (W.A.G.S) for Student-Led Conferencing
As a part of the Leader in Me (LiM) curriculum, in addition to learning about the 7 Habits, all students are involved in goal setting and keeping a leadership notebook. LiM actually uses the acronym W.I.G.S. (Wildly Important Goal Setting) to refer to personal goals set by students. However, we are Huskies and we altered the acronym to W.A.G.S. (Wildly Attainable Goal Setting) to extend the metaphor because everyone knows a happy Husky will wag its tail!
At SHE, we don't just set goals, we monitor our goals, and assess our progress at regular intervals. Occasionally, our goals have to be adjusted and that is just fine. As our partners in your child(ren)'s experience, we want all families involved in W.A.G.S. as well. Therefore, we have set aside three days, 2/12, (for grades 2nd & 3rd), 2/13 (for PK, K, & 1st grade). & 2/14 (for 4th & 5th) from 12:45 - 1:45 to allow parents to visit the classroom for student-led conferences. The students have been working on their leadership notebooks all year and we want them to have an opportunity to show these to their parents. Students in all grade levels are preparing, practicing, and will be ready to present to parents for their WAGS day. Families will receive a WAGS invitation and we hope that you will SAVE the DATE to come in for your child(ren)'s WAGS day!!
Playground Update:
The wait is over and our playground is set to be installed early in February. We hope that the grounds will be dried out from all of the rain over the past few weeks. The playground will be installed over a weekend and there will be no disruption for the students' recess times.
That is it for this week! As always, thank you for reading and for your partnership!
Please reach out if you have any questions or anything to share. Take care, Lorrie
