Principal's Weekly Update
RAISE Goal: to complete activities independently
Te reo phrase of the week: taihoa (wait)
Kia ora,
With the senior students being back in their brand new classrooms, we have had a wonderful week at school. On top of that we had an extremely successful school swimming sports, that not only showcased the swimming talent we have on offer, but really brought to the fore the massive effort that all of our students put in. It was so neat to see our students just giving their best and cheering on their peers. It was also great to see the swimming demonstrations put on by Rooms 5 and 6. Our younger students’ confidence and water safety skills have really improved this term.
Thank you so much for the huge turn out we had for our whanau learning conferences. We truly value the partnership we have with our whanau and know the meaningful goals that you helped set at the meetings will serve as important targets for our students to meet during the year.
Classroom Opening
The whole school is visiting Aotearoa Marae on Monday, before returning to school at approximately 12:30 pm. We are very lucky to have John Hooker from Nga Ruahine Rangi blessing the newly refurbished classrooms. We warmly invite all of our parents/caregivers and community members to attend.
We'd love for you to join us, check out the new classrooms, enjoy a sausage and bread, and possibly reminisce about your time spent at Matapu as a youngster.
Kaponga Athletics
Fingers crossed the weather plays ball and the annual Kaponga Athletics event goes ahead on Wednesday. Can I please ask our parents/caregivers to remember that this is a school event. Therefore your child/ren need to be sitting with the school at all times. The playground is out of bounds to all of our students. We appreciate your support with this as it becomes quite tricky when we have to try and find students for events who are not sitting with the school.

Room 1
It has been such a great week being back in our own classroom. We have had so much fun getting set up and playing games together. This week in writing we played Musical Stories. Similar to Musical chairs, each student starts their own story and when the music plays they jump up to dance around the room and when the music stops, they sit at the closest book and carry on the story. It really gets their creativity flowing. We had some epic adventures taking place!
Next week is another full on week for our kids:
Monday - we have our visit to the Marae and the grand opening of our classrooms in the afternoon
Tuesday - the kids have tech (The intermediate have kindly switched the days around for us so they don't miss out)
Wednesday - is Kaponga Athletics Day, thanks for filling in the forms and returning them to school
Thursday - We are in class together - WHOO HOO!
Friday - some kids will be out at the Mt Spa Swimming Sports in Opunake
Have a great weekend everyone.
Room 2
This week we have been enjoying our new and improved classroom. It has been lovely to show parents what it looks like at parent/teacher conferences. Thank you so much for making the effort to come and chat about your child's learning in Room 2 this year.

It has been a busy week with swimming sports and demonstrations, Wacky Wednesday activities, then parent interviews. We have kept our learning going as best we could and I am looking forward to seeing how the home learning has progressed when I check it today!
Our swimming demonstration went off well. Our focus is ‘water safety’ so we were able to show our parents how the things we are working on will help to make us more confident and able to deal with different situations in the water.
It has been fantastic to get feedback from parents saying they have noticed great progress in water confidence so we are feeling proud and will keep working on it!
