Capital University's Girls in Science Day.
WLMS Girls at Capital University
Select 7th and 8th-grades grade girls from WLMS attended Capital University's Girls in Science Day on December 14. The students learned about DNA, the heart, and cryptology through hands-on activities led by university staff. Career paths in the fields of Science and Mathematics were also explored in small group discussions.
Attendance Matters and YOU Can Help
You Will Receive an Absence Report
WLMS Relative Absence Report
Starting Tuesday, December 13, families will receive an absence report for your student. This report will define what chronic absenteeism is and identify your student’s chronic absenteeism rate, if applicable.
You will see a comparison between the number of days your student has missed with the number of days missed that would be considered chronically absent. This report has our leopard logo on it (please see the image below). You will receive this report periodically from WLMS.
You may have already received a similar report from the district that compares the number of days your student has missed with the average number of absences of your student’s grade level classmates.
If there is anything that we can do to help support you and your student to be present every day, please contact us. If your student must be absent due to illness or another reason, please continue to report those absences using this link: https://tinyurl.com/WLMSAbsenceNote. Thank you for your cooperation.
Please Look at The Image Below. You Will Receive This Report Periodically.

What Families Should Know About Chronic Absenteeism
It is very important that students are in school every day
You will receive notice from the district but especially from the school. Please ensure your child comes to school every day and report any absences from school.
DID YOU KNOW...
- Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful, and on track to graduation.
- Frequent absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully, or facing some other difficulty.
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th-grade test scores.
- Missing 10%, or 2 days a month, over the course of the school year, can affect a student’s academic success.

DISTRICT MESSAGE/FAQ REGARDING MEASLES
As you may be aware, Columbus Public Health is investigating confirmed cases of measles at several local public places around the city.
Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease that is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The most important thing anyone can do to prevent measles is to get the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is safe and highly effective. One dose of MMR is 93% effective at preventing measles, and two doses are 97% effective at preventing measles
Please, take a time to read this. It's very important!

Weather Related School Closings.
What you need to know?
When winter weather forces classes to be cancelled, you need to know right away.
As winter weather approaches, Columbus City Schools is ready to help you plan ahead should the District be forced to cancel classes or shift to remote learning due to inclement weather or staffing challenges.
Our goal is to announce a class cancellation or transition to a remote learning model as soon as we can, so we are constantly monitoring weather forecasts and road conditions, and staff absences, and will make an announcement the night before whenever possible.
If weather conditions are such that a determination the night before is not possible, the Superintendent and her Operations team will make a decision no later than 5:30 a.m.
Once the decision has been made, the next step is to alert parents, teachers, and staff.
STAY CONNECTED: News about cancellations of classes, a shift to remote learning, or the cancellation of extra-curricular activities, field trips, and/or student-athletic events due to inclement weather or staffing challenges, are shared in several ways.
- Make sure the contact information on file at your child’s school is accurate. If you need to update this information, contact the main office in your child’s school or update online in Parent Portal. (This includes emergency contacts, phone numbers, and email addresses).
- All families and staff will be alerted through an automated call, email, and text message from the District’s phone system. It is important to have your updated contact information on file in order to receive this notification.
- Students should take their assigned Chromebook and charger home each night, should the decision be made to transition to remote learning.
- Follow Columbus City Schools on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, or check our website. As soon as the decision is made to delay or cancel school, we’ll share news about school cancellations, transitioning to remote learning, and other schedule updates on our social media pages.
- Monitor the news on local television and radio stations.

Weekly Family Engagement Sessions On Zoom
CCS hosts weekly Zoom sessions addressing the most pressing topics and answering the most common questions families have. Called Virtual Family Engagement Sessions, these sessions are hosted by the Department of Communications and Engagement and feature expert District staff and many of our community partners sharing information and insights on important topics.
Sessions are recorded so that you can watch on your own time.
Parent Portal (Infinate Campus) Access
We have a goal that 100% of our families will have active accounts for the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and complete the annual update. Why? The simple answer is that it helps improve our communication. Keeping your address, phone, numbers, and email up to date helps:
- the teachers communicate classroom information.
- ensure that you will get all school-related informational phone calls.
- ensure that everyone receives newsletters such as this one!
- the school to be able to contact you quickly in the event of an emergency.
