Black History Month Week of Action
As a culminating event for Black History Month, Black Student Union is excited to announce Action Week from February 28th-March 4th! BSU will be programming throughout the week. Follow @mbsuashland on Instagram for daily educational and event posts!
Black histories, cultures, and identities are important no matter what month it is. As we say goodbye to February, we must continue to advocate for antiracism in our minds, words, and actions.
Graduation Update
Graduation is still planned for Friday June 10. We have the band shell at Lithia Park reserved that day and intend to hold graduation there as long as it is safe to do so. This is the graduation scenario we all want to see.
If there is a change in the trajectory of the pandemic and it becomes unsafe to hold it at Lithia Park, our Plan B is to hold a graduation ceremony on our field like we did last year. We will be planning for both scenarios and hoping for the first.

Band/Orchestra Donations
This year the instrumental music (Band/Orchestra) programs at both AHS and AMS have had the incredible opportunity to purchase over $80,000 worth of new instruments for students. Because of the size of the order (placed with the help of Ashland Schools, the Ashland Schools Foundation, and private donors) and discounts related to the global pandemic our corporate partner, The Conn Selmer Corporation, has been able to offer discounts that have significantly increased the number and quality of instruments we have so far been able to purchase. Our partnership and the new instruments have been recently featured in a variety of news outlets throughout Southern Oregon and we are trying to take advantage of this opportunity and this pricing to push for more funding to further improve the quality and number of instruments we can offer to students in the district in order to be able to better provide musical enrichment and support for every child who seeks it. We’re sharing the links below to the recent news articles and reaching out to you not to ask for money, but to ask you to share this information through your networks to help us create broader awareness so that those who have the ability to give, either personally or professionally, know that they have this special opportunity to impact the quality of education and enrichment for thousands of students over the two-three decade life span of these instruments. So, if you can give please consider donating to the Ashland Schools Foundation donation page (link below) for this program, but mostly we are asking you to share this information, because the more people who know, the greater the odds are that people with the ability to give will learn about this amazing opportunity and hopefully chose to do so. All the best! The AHS and AMS Instrumental Music Team

ACT and SAT Updates
Students planning on applying to four year colleges that require test scores usually take the ACT and/or SAT tests in spring of junior year and/or fall of senior year. The Oregon Public Universities no longer require test scores for admissions. Students can register for the ACT and SAT online and those who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible for fee waivers for both tests. Please contact karyn.barats@ashland.k12.or.us to obtain a fee waiver.
*Please note that if you were signed up for the ACT on February 12th, the location has changed. It will no longer be hosted at AHS. If you have any questions, contact ACT.
ASPIRE at AHS
ASPIRE’s trained volunteer mentors help students explore education and career pathways. Mentors assist students in researching colleges, preparing admissions and scholarship applications, understanding the financial aid process, and many other aspects of the road to post-secondary education and careers. Now is a great time for juniors to sign up to work with an ASPIRE mentor. Students who want to learn more about ASPIRE or sign up for a mentor can contact jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us.
Scholarship deadlines are approaching!

Important FINANCIAL AID INFO for Senior Families!!!
Students have had the opportunity to complete their portion of the 2022-23 FAFSA in their CCR classes. There is also a parent section of the FAFSA, where the student’s parent(s) need to provide demographic and financial information. The 2022-2023 FAFSA went live October 1st and will use tax information from 2020. If not familiar with FAFSA, senior parents are strongly encouraged to watch this recording of the Financial Aid 101 info session to learn more about how to complete the application! If students or parents do not have social security numbers, please contact Jen Marsden so she can provide guidance on how to fill out the FAFSA without an SSN and information on ORSAA, an alternative financial aid form. Please reach out to jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us with questions or for help on any financial aid applications.
Upcoming College & Career Pathways Info Sessions: All sessions will be on zoom from 5:30 - 6:30 pm and can be accessed at the following link: https://asdconnect-org.zoom.us/j/97711618881. The sessions will be recorded and available on the AHS YouTube Channel, where you can already find info session recordings from last year.
Wednesday, November 3, Community College Opportunities and Pathways: Community colleges offer an extensive array of professional training programs in fields such as Mechanics, Electronics, Culinary Arts, Massage Therapy, Dental Hygiene, Physical Therapy, Graphic Design and more! Students can also complete general education credits at a community college, receive a two-year A.A or A.S degree and then transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree. Learn more about these potential college and career pathways and how to access them! There will also be an overview of the Oregon Promise grant and other financial aid and scholarships available to AHS students.
Wednesday, December 8, Scholarships and Financial Aid: AHS counseling staff will provide information on scholarship opportunities for AHS seniors, including tips on how to complete the online OSAC Scholarship E-app and the AHS Local Scholarships applications. Counselors will present scholarship information first, and then discuss and answer questions about financial aid, including FAFSA and CSS completion, for parent/guardians and students who would like to stay for more information on those applications. This meeting is important if students plan to attend a private/public university, community college or trade school, and are interested in finding funds to pay for school.
Recording of College Pathways 101 9/14/2021: Overwhelmed by the thought of planning for college? AHS counseling staff will present information on college pathways, specifically geared toward junior and senior students and their families. Topics covered will include a general overview of the process of applying to both community colleges and four-year universities, ACT/SAT testing, and how to access financial aid/scholarships.
Recording of Financial Aid 101 9/29/2021: Learn about the pathways to access financial aid and scholarships! We will discuss the process for completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), an online application which qualifies students to receive the Federal Pell Grant, the Oregon Opportunity Grant, the Oregon Promise, and government loans. Even if you think your family will not qualify for federal financial aid, it is important to complete the FAFSA. Many colleges will not give students merit aid unless they have a FAFSA on record. We will also briefly cover the CSS Profile, a separate online application many private schools use to determine institutional financial aid.
