1. Name and position in AJAC?
Hello everyone, my name is Gillian Power, and I am a Secondary School English Teacher.
2. Where are you from?
I am from an area called County Limerick in Ireland.
3. Family?
I have three siblings: an older brother, a twin sister, and a younger sister.
4. Childhood nickname?
Just a very nice and straightforward Gill.
5. Favourite food?
Oh, a perfect Sunday roast chicken dinner complete with roast vegetables, mash, and stuffing.
6. Hobbies?
I like reading, yoga and going to the cinema.
7. Favourite place in the UAE?
I’m sure it must have been mentioned several times before, but it is by far Jebal Jais mountains in Ras Al Khaimah.
8. Most memorable experience as a teacher so far?
A former student of mine thanked me for all that I had taught her, which was nice to hear. As teachers, we can only hope that what we teach our students is appreciated and beneficial.
9. Funniest moment in your teaching career?
Any moment when there is a miscommunication between English and Arabic, and it gets a giggle.
10. The most challenging moment in your teaching career?
In my first year of teaching in the UAE, I found the behaviour of the students quite challenging. It took a while, but at the end I was able to understand each and every student's unique ways and abilities.
11. Childhood hero?
My grandfather, Cornelius Foley.
12. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?
I would love to work in the film industry.
