Burnette Books
December 2013
Season's Greetings!
Hooray! We made it! I hope you all enjoy your very well deserved break! And when we return, only three weeks until a VERY long holiday break! I am certainly looking forward to that!
Some highlights of our news...
- Changes in the media center
- Better way to use YouTube in your classroom
- Nonfiction book preview
- Stories for December (even some for older grades!)
Media News
Morning Checkout
The Media Center is now open starting at 8:20! Students in grades 1-5 may come to the Media Center after reporting to their homerooms. They must bring their media sticks and their choice cards. We hope this will encourage our students to visit the Media Center and read even more!
More Books!
To keep encouraging our readers, one of your suggestions was to allow the students to checkout more books. When we return from the holiday break, we will be rolling out the new checkout policies! Starting in January...
Books still will only be checked out for two weeks, and students with overdue or damaged books will lose the privilege to checkout books until the books are returned or fines paid.
Though we don't want to limit student choices too much, we will only allow students to have one "world record" book at a time, and encourage them to only take one book in a series (i.e., Percy Jackson, Harry Potter).
- K-2 may check out 2 books
- Third graders may check out 3 books
- Fourth graders may check out 4 books
- Fifth graders may check out 5 books

Media Lessons
Each grade level will be visiting the Media Center in December. Some of the things we will be covering:
- Using Destiny to make "wish lists"
- Introducing leveled library "resource lists" for teachers
- Discussing new checkout policies

Nonfiction Preview
We will be displaying a collection of non-fiction books all day in the Media Center on December 16. Please stop by during your planning and take a look at some of the actual books as well as the catalogs. Your input will help me choose the books to purchase for our Media Center.

Using YouTube
Have you ever shown a YouTube video and been stuck with unwanted ads? Or tired of the "related videos" at the end? Do you want to be absolutely sure your YouTube video is safe?
Use SafeShare! It's very easy... simply find the YouTube video you want to show, highlight and copy the link. Then go to SafeShare.tv and paste the link in the box. The SafeShare website will generate a "safe link" that you can use to show your video.

Story Time
When you sign up for a story time, please make sure to indicate which book you would like. Also, please remember that story times are co-taught lessons. The more the students see their teachers involved, the better the lesson will be!
Bear Snores On
K-2
Read the story of the bear who is disturbed in his lair... then investigate animals that hibernate!
The Gingerbread Girl
1-3
Read the story of the sassy gingerbread girl and compare and contrast with the story of her brother.
Snow Sounds
K-5
Using all sounds, this book describes a winter morning. Younger students will pair this book with a non-fiction book, Snowy Weather Days. Older students will work on figurative language, creating their own onomatopoeia cartoon strip.
