The Gower Gazette
Week 13- November 16, 2018
In The Classroom...
This week we connected literacy with social studies and learned about the military and what it means to be a veteran. The kids were very interested in this topic and we had great discussions each day. I hope they came home talking about what they learned.
In Writing we learned about transition words and how they are used in "How To" writings. The kids have been working on creating recipes for Thanksgiving. We hope to create a cookbook to share. It should be interesting!
In Math we began looking at comparison problems; these types of problems ask students how many more or how many less and call for the kids to discover the difference. The kids seem to have a great grasp on these types of math problems and have developed a good understanding of the word compare. Ask them what it means.
In Science we started our unit on balance and motion. Our unit began with learning about crayfish (I know, you are wondering what crayfish have to do with balance...). The kids were so excited to learn about these animals. Ask them to share some facts with you. After learning about crayfish the kids all had to balance one on its nose... yep that's right, they had to figure out how to use counterweights to balance a PAPER crayfish on its nose using the tip of their fingers. It was quite fun and the kids were super excited to figure it out.
We also got to Skype this week in California. We learned about elephant seals and even got to see them on the beach at Hearst San Simeon State Park. It was pretty awesome to observe these animals. We learned cool facts like they can weigh up to 5, 000 lbs, be as long as 14 kids standing shoulder to shoulder, and they molt. What a cool experience!
Next week is just a two day week with Tuesday being an Early Release Day. Be sure to have your calendars marked for that. I hope your weekend has been great. Don't forget to read the Notes section for more important info.
Have a great Sunday evening.
Ms. Gower

Notes~
- No Homework- There will be no homework Monday or Tuesday with the short week. Folders will not go home.
- Projects- These are due after Thanksgiving. I sent home due dates for each child before we tracked out and it is also on your child's calendar that is in his/her homework folder. Use this coming week to finish up projects and have your child practice presenting. I am so super excited to see their projects and travel with them virtually.
- Party Planners Needed- Part of our classroom tradition is hosting a Holidays Around the World party. It connects with our projects, social studies unit and virtual travels. I am looking for a couple of parents to help put this together. I have past party ideas to help get it started and the decorations so it shouldn't take too much time. Email or Class Dojo me if you are interested in helping plan this for the kids. I truly appreciate your help so that I can continue to focus on planning engaging lessons for the kids.
- Need Help with Thanksgiving- Red Barn in Angier is offering free Thanksgiving meals for families in need. You can either go to their restaurant on Thanksgiving or give them a call and they will deliver a meal to you. If you are in need check them out.
