Weekly Newsletter
December 7th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
I hope all of you are looking forward to the upcoming winter break! We've had a wonderfully active year full of so much learning and growth. I'm sure everyone is excited to enjoy a period of rest and reflection over the holidays.
Students---I know the exam period can be a stressful time. Please remember to do your best and know that it's progress not perfection that matters most! A week from now it will all be over and you'll have plenty of time to relax with family and friends.
Please be sure to get a full night of sleep on Sunday night. Several studies link proper sleep to our ability to recall information, focus, and make good decisions. Getting a good night's sleep will go a long way in helping you perform your best exam days.
Next week is sure to fly by as we wrap up Term 2 with the Winter Concert and Candle Lighting Ceremony. Please remember that Friday 12/13 will be a half day. Students will be dismissed at 10:50am and buses will depart at 11:10am.
Have a great weekend!

Morning Calm InstaRead
To encourage student participation, the library has created an InstaRead board with a short description for the 5 Chapter and 5 Middle School book nominees. After students read a book, they can come to the library and get a "InstaRead Like" sticker to put on the bulletin board. We hope that by seeing what their teachers and friends are reading, students will want to read these Morning Calm books and vote for their favorite!

Grade 5 - Learn about the Ancient Civilization of India in Social Studies
We dove into Hinduism and examined how the ancient religion still affect the lives of a billion people because of the caste system. Currently we are in the midst of our lesson on Hindu gods and students are tasked with creating their own version of a deity that embody Hindu characteristics.
- Mr. Thach
Grade 8 - Research the Japanese Occupation in Social Studies
Students either chose an individual research project or a group project where they conducted interviews with members of the outside community to gather more insight into their chosen topic.
This week, students presented their research and findings to the class in a formal presentation. A big shout out to Minseo Kim and Soyun Moon who went above and beyond by locating and interviewing elders in their community who had actually experienced the occupation period.

NaNoWriMo Accomplishment!
National Novel Writing Month Club (NaNoWriMo) went particularly well this year with student "novels" totaling 35,000+ words. Although students differed in their approach to writing and their choice of genre - science fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, romance, and nonfiction - they all showed a willingness to push themselves as writers and to grow as students of English.
Students were also awarded Dalton Cup points for their efforts!
Korea: 9766 words = 100 Points
Cheongna: 9511 words = 100 Points
Dalton: 9462 words = 100 Points
Phoenix: 6915 words = 75 Points
Mr.Cavasin and Mr.Baker are proud to see the growing popularity of NaNoWriMo and of writing in the CDS middle school and encourage students to look for future writing events and contests to show off their abilities!
