New Beginnings
New beginnings, A chance to start off fresh My shoes leave prints in the soft, white snow And I see my breath in front of me The sun shines against the snow, and the air is cool There is a light breeze, And the frost on the trees glitters in the sunlight New beginnings…

Holley Bretas Attends All State Choir
Junior Holley Bretas represented Rimrock for the second year in a row at the All State Choir in Rexburg, Idaho on January 31st through February 2nd. The event was hosted by BYU Idaho and was made up of Jazz, Treble and Mixed Choir. Holley thought the event was "really fun" but mentioned that her favorite part was listening to others perform. There were familiar faces for Holley from last year and new connections were made as well. If there are any younger students interested in improving their singing ability, Holley suggests that, "...the more space in the mouth, the better...try to raise your soft palate while singing and visualize a vibration coming from the center of your forehead to the audience...like a laser."
Way to go, Raider!

Liza Hurtado's Senior Project
Liza’s project is about raising money to open up an art program in Grand View Elementary. She is also working on getting an art instructor so he/she can come down for a whole day and show the students some type of art. She chose this topic because she loves art and, when she was little, they didn’t have an art program at the school. Liza just wants the kids to have the chance to explore something new since the school at that time didn’t get to have one. What she has done so far in her project was fundraising to get money for the program which took her one day to do concessions. She is also still looking for an art instructor. She’s accomplished so much by working really hard since she really wants the art program for the little kids. She said it’s been kind of hard, but she knows she can work through it and make it happen.

High School Girls Basketball
By: Laura Gasper
The highschool girls basketball team has ended their regular season games with a 17-2 season record and 10-1 conference record. Their 47-29 point win against Liberty Charter put them in first place headed into districts. We've also had senior night for our one senior, Mylee Meyers.
The JV team also did well this season finishing in third place in the district. They played in their tournament against Riverstone and had a close game with the end score being 40-37. Unfortunately, they lost which was the ending game to their season but still finished in third.
When I talked to a couple of the players and asked what their favorite memory of the season has been so far this is what they said. Sami Jewett said, “...beating Liberty by 18 points.” Abby Eldridge, a JV player and Varsity floater, says, “...making it to districts with both JV and Varsity.” When asked what motivated them the most this season both responded with, “...our coach, Kyla Jewett.”
The varsity girls have played their first district game against North Star and won. They advanced and played Liberty on Saturday the 2nd, and won that game 41-22. Now, they will be advancing to the state tournament on February 14th in Nampa at Columbia High School.
Good Luck Lady Raiders!

High School Boys Basketball
Basketball season is almost over and spring sports are right around the corner! With only a few games left to go, our boys have been enjoying this season and most of them are already looking forward to next year. Although Varsity team will be losing some talented seniors, they’ll have lots of freshman moving up to fill those empty spaces next year. Both JV and Varsity don’t have a lot of boys and they say that it’s kind of difficult having only four full time Varsity players. The others have to float from JV to Varsity. Some other struggles a few of the players have faced this year is having to overcome health issues and just simply getting back into the basics of basketball.
Interviews...
What's something good about the season so far? Bad?
Kevin- The JV team has been doing really good so far. 8-4. The bad part is having only four full time players on Varsity. The others have to float from JV to Varsity.
Michael- Winning a lot more games than last year. Bad part is that I got a hernia.
Nick- We won 2 games. We lost a lot of games.
Ian- it’s pretty good because we have fun but we lose a lot, so that’s bad.
Do you think you’ll play next year?
Kevin- Of course!
Michael- Yes and I think it’ll be better than this year.. hopefully.
Nick- Um, yeah I think so.. maybe.
Ian- Yes, I think I’ll play, maybe, probably.
What were some challenges you faced?
Kevin- getting back into the flow and just the basics of basketball because I hadn’t practiced much over the break.
Michael- Just working on ball handling and everything with my left hand.
Nick- Well, I can’t catch the ball...and I foul a lot.
Ian- The running is the most challenging part of playing basketball because running is hard.
How do you think you guys worked as a team, and do you think you could do better?
Kevin- We work decently as a team, but we could definitely do better. We’re still working on it.
Michael- We could do better by probably talking more on defense and getting less turnovers.
Nick- Sometimes we do good, but other times it’s really bad so, yeah, we could do better.

Junior High Boys Basketball
Recently I got to interview the junior high boys basketball team to get some quotes and see what's going on. Cooper Raymond hopes that for this season that they have fun, work hard and win. So far, he thinks the season is going really good. Their first game was awesome, “We destroyed them." Cooper is most proud of how hard he’s worked this year. He has been working on his shooting formation, and his goal for the season is to get better and have fun. Layth Jenkins hopes that they win, and his favorite thing about the season is “EVERYTHING.” When I asked him what he is most proud of this year he said, “Me." Ira Black's favorite thing about basketball this year is winning and the bus rides. He is most proud of his team this year and his goals are to have fun and win. Wylee Rinner hopes to be champions. He said their first game was awesome and he has been working on pack line defense. Roper White hopes to make tournaments, and his favorite thing about basketball this year is the team. He’s been working really hard on shooting. Eli Aquiso thinks the season is going pretty good since they won their first game and the score was 49-14. Carson Raymond said the first game was good. He scored the first point. Trever Carothers hopes to have fun and win.
So far this season, A Team is 3:1 and B Team 2:2 and C Team is undefeated.

Cheering
The very first season of cheerleading is coming to an end. I'm a cheerleader and I am very sad that is coming to an end. I think the cheerleaders have influenced the school spirit by pumping up the crowd at the games. The most challenging part about cheerleading has to be coming up with dance moves because we want to make sure that our dance moves match with our cheers. My favorite memory of cheer has to be when I went to practice with my leggings on inside out. I didn’t even notice until Pim called it out. Another favorite memory has to be when I cheered for the very first time. It was so much fun and I wasn’t really nervous, it being my first time cheering. Ever since myself and the other cheerleaders have started cheering, we have improved a lot.. I can say that we have gotten better at remembering the cheers and being more loud. Joining cheer has been one of the best decisions I have ever made because I have made so many memories with the other cheerleaders and I can’t wait for next season.

Freshmen Fears
Ninth grade year is one of the major milestones people go through...the beginning of the end of your school years. When grades really start to matter, many fears come with entering high school. The core materials become a little more challenging, more responsibilities and new things to learn. Being a freshman can be challenging at times...having to take more responsibility about the homework I have to do. It's scary to go from being the oldest kids in junior high to the youngest kids in high school. Having a good mentality going into finals is great because it's the the same as junior high, just a little more challenging materials. Approaching the beginning of the year is scary because I am seeing older people that I never talk to and new teachers to meet. If I had one piece of advice for future freshman, it is just to turn in homework, do your work in class and pay attention.
A Brief Guide on How to Stop Procrastinating
By: Jacqueline Schkade
Have you ever sat down to complete an important task — and then suddenly discovered you were up wandering around or engaged in a social media app? Or perhaps you suddenly realize that the dog needs to be fed, homework needs to be done, your bedroom needs cleaned— or maybe you should go ahead and have lunch, even though it’s only 11 a.m.?
Next thing you know, it’s the end of the day and your important task still remains unfinished.
Most people struggle with procrastination, according to a 2014 study done by LOS StudyMode, an ed-tech company, 87% of high school students procrastinate. When asked “why would you procrastinate?” A Rimrock student replied with, “I convince myself that I have better things to do, it becomes a habit, and its really hard to break.”
Procrastination is a potentially dangerous force, causing “victims” to fail out of school, perform poorly at work, put off medical treatment or delay saving for retirement. A Case Western Reserve University study found that high school procrastinators ended up with higher stress, more illness and lower grades by the end of the semester.
So how can we stop procrastinating? Here are seven great strategies from experts that have been shown to work:
1. Do your hardest thing first
a. Use your limited energy to get your hardest task out of the way. The longer you wait, the less chance of success you have.
2. Start your day over mid-day
a. This forces you to shorten your window of procrastination before you have to start over.
3. Break the work into small pieces
a. If you start small, it may not feel so daunting, or unpleasant.
4. Tell other people
a. If you tell someone about what you are doing you are more likely to hold yourself accountable and actually finish the task.
5. Set your clock fast
a. It's surprising how effective thinking you have 15 minutes less than you do can be on procrastination.
6. Get rid of things that can interrupt you
a. As hard as it might be, put your iPhone out of reach. It's just too tempting to pick it up.
7. Plan a "day of no procrastination and no excuses"
a. Take everything you've been avoiding and get it done in one big swoop. One painful day will open up a lot more time to things you actually enjoy doing.
El clima en México y Los Estados Unidos
El clima aquí y en México es muy diferente. Aquí las temperaturas cambian muy drásticamente de mucho calor a mucho frío. En México el clima también es diferente depende de el lugar en el que te encuentres. Translation provided by Mrs. Burk:
The climate here and in Mexico is very different. Here, the temperatures change drastically from very hot to very cold. In Mexico, the climate is also very different depending on the place and what you come across. In addition, the majority of places in this climate are fresh. Mexico is in the equatorial region and this leads to refreshing and hot climates. The United States is closer to the north pole and the climate is more cold.
Luis Araujo says this about the climate of La Romita, Guanajuato, "It is very refreshing and hot, with fresh mornings."
April Varela stated about Teul, Zacatecas, "It is very hot in the afternoons and the climate feels refreshing."
