Horizon High School
BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Welcome back to Horizon High School for the 2021 - 2022 school year!
We are so excited to have students back in the building and engaging in face-to-face learning with our incredible teachers and staff! Parents, thank you for sharing your students with us and allowing us the opportunity to develop their learning through critical thinking, analyzing, synthesizing, and apply skills and content from various curriculum.
I am looking forward to serving our school as principal. Ms. Terra Paul will be serving as assistant principal/activity director, Mr. Marty Tonjes will continue his work as assistant principal/athletic director, and Mrs. Lisa Saunar will continue as our assistant principal of Curriculum and Instruction.
Yes, our school has seen some change in leadership as Mrs. Brady was selected to be one of Executive Directors of Curriculum and Instruction for Adams 12. We want to thank Mrs. Brady for her many years of dedication to our Hawk community! We are excited for her Hawk influence to impact our school district! Once a Hawk, always a Hawk!
Parents often ask me how they can be more supportive to their high school student or even more involved in their child’s school experience. Here are some “tried and true tips” that I would like to offer to you as your students head back to school.
- Review your student’s course schedule and talk through what their school day will look like. Where does the student have angst or worry? What excites them? Talk about it and continue to discuss as the year progresses.
- Encourage your student to get involved in their school above and beyond the academic courses. Students who are involved in co-curricular/extra-curricular activities develop leadership and teamwork skills to use for a lifetime! And bonus…..they get to be part of something so much bigger than themselves. It’s a beautiful thing to see your student playing on a team, singing in the choir, serving the community with NHS, or developing projects with their club. When a student finds “their people” in the school, their self-confidence will burst forth and the positive outcomes can be seen in the academic side of things as well.
- Get involved with your student’s activities. Be in the crowd cheering them on, clapping for them, and hugging them when it’s over! They may say that they don’t want you there, but they really are glad you’re there. I’ve seen this so many times as a band director and school administrator. The joy for students and parents sharing in these activities is immeasurable.
- Take a moment to read the email messages from the school. It’s worth it, because that’s where the school leaders can convey what has happened, what needs to happen, or share celebrations that you don’t want to miss.
- “Like” your school’s social media – it’s often the place where victories are celebrated, information is shared, and you may even get to see pictures of your student!
- Celebrate your student’s successes (small and large) throughout the year. Your encouragement and support mean so much, even when your student doesn’t say so. Yes, the years go fast but the days are long, but you are a HUGE source of strength and encouragement for your student.
May this school year be full of great success! I look forward to meeting you and seeing you at our school’s events throughout the year! Go Hawks! It’s going to be a great year of learning!

ATTENDANCE PROTOCOL
ATTENDANCE POLICY (District Policy 5020) (Spanish: District Policy 5020) In addition to the District Policy for attendance, the following are specific Horizon High School Attendance policies and procedures:
*Teachers will be taking attendance within the first 10 minutes of each class period.*
Parents/guardians are expected to take an active role in monitoring the attendance and academic progress of their student. We strongly encourage utilizing Infinite Campus, the district’s internet-based student information system.
Parents/ guardians are asked to call the Attendance Office (720)972-4597 on the day of or within 48 hours of the absence to excuse the student for that full day. Refer to District Policy 5020 for excused absences. Pre-arranged absences may be called in at any time prior to the absence.
Attempts will be made daily utilizing the automated calling system to inform parents/guardians of absences. Therefore, it is important that the Attendance Office is provided an accurate phone number that can receive these calls. You can update contact information online or by calling Ruth Cummings @ 720-972-4430
A student’s Dean will be notified weekly when the student has had two or more unexcused absences recorded for the previous week. Consequences assigned for truancy vary and could include the following: ● Student/Dean Conference ● District Attendance Hearing ● District Discipline Hearing. Students with excessive absences risk entering non-student status resulting in withdrawal from school.
After these 5 excused absences have been accrued, documentation must be provided (i.e. a doctor’s note or court order) or contact must be made with an administrator. Non-medical absences must be excused by an administrator. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain an attendance printout signifying changes resulting from appeals and to notify teachers accordingly.
Extended absences (more than 3 days) for non-family emergencies such as vacations are discouraged and can impact student learning and academic performance, especially those at the end of a grading period. Please complete the extended absences form and share the document with your students teacher’s to ensure your student has received work expectations prior to leaving.
