Mustang Round-Up
2018-19 Cheyenne Middle School Newsletter - April
Principal News
Hello, Cheyenne Families!
Springtime is one of my favorite times of the year. The grass quickly becomes green, tulips display their colorful petals, and the trees blossom with white and purple blooms. Although, it seems old man winter continues to sweep in each weekend I hope that spring comes in quickly to warm us up.
We have been busy setting our testing schedule for April. We will continue to update the newsletter with any changes and send out information through our website and email.
On the days we will be testing, it is best to make sure that students are getting a good night's rest, eating a well-balanced breakfast or lunch, and arriving at school on time. Our schedule is pretty tight on those days that we are testing and we are trying to provide uninterrupted testing environments. We request there be no checkouts during our testing days between 7:50am-10:30am. We will not be able to check a student out once they have logged into their testing session. If students are late to school, we will not be able to add them to their testing session once it begins. They will be required to make up their test on another day and time.
All middle school Oklahoma State Testing Program assessments are given online. Students will be tested at Cheyenne Middle School through their homeroom class using their charged Chromebook. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will take a Math and English Test. 8th graders will also receive a Science and Writing Test.
We still have openings for volunteers to monitor state testing. We appreciate all our volunteers for signing up to assist with the OSTP testing. Please remember to arrive 20 minutes early to prepare for testing which begins at 7:50am.
Parent Student Teacher Guides for the OSTP are available online. The links below take you to the practice test and information.

PTO News
April showers bring May flowers….and fun events at Cheyenne!! On April 25th, we will be hosting our 8th Grade Social. Details and a SignUp Genius will be sent out soon! We want to make this a memorable event for our 8th graders. They have worked so hard and are about to say good bye to Middle School, this will be perfect for celebrating together as a Class!
Planning is already underway for our big fundraiser, Walk To Remember, on May 10th. This event focuses on the Oklahoma City bombing. Students will walk to Mitch Park’s memorial and listen to a Survivor share their story. A portion of our raised money, from wristband sales, will be donated to the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. The wristbands will give your student a snack, drink and bounce house/ obstacle course time at the carnival that follows. All students get to enjoy the carnival and game booths, set up and ran by the Cheyenne Elective teachers. The money raised at this event will go towards our recess area makeover! We would love to add more activities, fresh paint, outdoor seating and a ball cart. Right now, there is not a single trash can or a place to sit out there. We have plans, with your generous donations, to install tables, with umbrellas for shade, benches, a brand new gaga pit, trashcans and benches in the shade. We want this area to be a place where students want to be, give them enjoyment and socialize with their classmates. More info and ways to help will be shared soon.

Personal Devices
The implementation of school provided Chromebooks brings an end to the academic need for personal devices during the school day. With that, we will be expecting personal devices to be off and out of sight for the duration of the school day. In remaining consistent with our middle school practice, devices will be allowed before the first school bell at 7:40 and after the last bell at 2:40. We recognize that personal devices are part of the everyday world that we live in as well as our future, and know the incredible capability that today’s technology brings to our life. For young adolescents, it also presents many challenges. Recent research is now showing that middle school-aged students are spending an average of 4.5 hours a day on their personal devices. That number increases to 8 hours a day by the high school years. As educators and parents we see how many of our kids are immersed on social media platforms, gaming, mass
(sometimes hidden) communications and other varieties of content consumption. For a great many students this creates social-emotional and/or academic challenges during school, in addition to the challenges from an instructional point of view. We are seeking to increase classroom engagement and reduce outside distractions, and we appreciate your support in this transition. If you need to get an urgent message to your child, we will be happy to help in that communication from the office.
