A Note from Administration
Greetings Parents and Guardians!
We hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather. The leaves are turning and it makes the landscape look amazing.
I wanted to share a couple of things with our Woodward Mill Family. First, thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes during the recent passing of my Mother. Many have asked what they could do to support my family and me during this difficult time. If you were one of the families that asked or would like to support, or have questions, please feel free to speak to my Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Ortiz at 678-407-7591. Again, thank you for your kind words of encouragement. We are truly a family.
Secondly, beginning on Monday, October 24, 2022, we are welcoming parents and guardians back into the building for lunch and to volunteer in teachers' classrooms! Please click here for Volunteer and Cafeteria Guidelines. Parents are welcome, however, please adhere to the guidelines to ensure safety and security of all stakeholders here at Woodward Mill Elementary School.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your grade level AP or myself.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Dr. Brown

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Parent Night
Character Trait of the Month
Each month, we will focus on a different character trait. The character trait for the month of October is “Sharing”. When we talk with students about sharing, it goes beyond just sharing toys and “things”. We also want our students to share ideas respectfully with one another. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during October to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience to celebrate children’s early language and social-emotional development. Each year Read for the Record brings together millions of adults and children as they read the same book on the same day, building an intergenerational community through reading. Held this year on October 27, 2022, over 24 million people have participated in Read for the Record. This year’s selection is Nigel and the Moon, written by Antwan Eady and illustrated by Gracey Zhang.

Spotlight on SEL Picture Books
Life by Cynthia Rylant
Life begins small, then grows…
There are so many wonderful things about life, both in good times and in times of struggle. Through the eyes of the world’s animals—including elephants, monkeys, whales, and more—the author offers a moving meditation on finding beauty around us every day and finding strength in adversity.
Beanstack
Our school-wide reading Beanstack training is underway! Students will be learning to use the digital platform, Beanstack, to log reading minutes and participate in reading challenges throughout the next month. Our ultimate goal is to build a strong culture of reading at Woodward Mill. For many students, Beanstack is a familiar program, as it has been used for several years by the Gwinnett County Public Library to log summer reading minutes.
Students will use their GCPS student number and their birthday month and date (MMDD) as their password. Students will be able to log reading minutes either on their laptop or on a mobile device.
We are excited about using Beanstack to support our community of readers.
