As we close 2017 and start 2018...please remember to dress in layers. New England is known for it's unpredictable weather, so please plan accordingly!
Here are some 'annual' gentle reminders:
-Please dress for the outdoors, hats, gloves, coats, (no shorts) and boots if needed
-Please provide extra pants or leggings in your child’s backpack. Accidents happen and kids can get wet/muddy when they are playing outside
-Please check your child’s head once a week. Headlice is part of Elementary School life and checking your child's head is the best way to stop the spread. For more information please read the attached 2 page informational letter.
-Please make sure your child has breakfast. We have breakfast here if time is tight.
-This time of year is especially hectic. Please make sure your child is getting to bed in time to ensure enough sleep. Unplug for at least one hour before bedtime. This is a great time to read or catch up on the happening of the day.
-Please keep your child home if they are sick! An extra day (24 hours) is required to rest and recover once a fever is below 100.4 without fever reducing medication, and any vomiting has stopped.
INDOOR RECESS OR NOT?
We use the National Weather Service chart (below)
NWS Windchill Information and Chart
www.nws.noaa.gov/om/cold/wind_chill.shtml
as our guideline for determining if the temperatures are too low and frostbite could occur if we were to go outside for recess, otherwise we try to go out and get some 'fresh air' daily.
As you can see in the attached link, it would take extreme temps (i.e. below zero & combined with high winds) and 30 minutes exposure before you'd be in danger of frostbite. Knowing that our recess is 25 minutes, the danger of frostbite at recess is minimal.
Please remember to dress the children in layers as the weather can change hourly here in New England.
We will make every effort to get students outdoors for recess (except in rain or if the surfaces are ice covered and untreated.)
Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.
Thank you to Herrick & White architectural woodworkers for the donation of crayon boats to our kindergarten and preschool classrooms! Kendra Wallin from Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders in Harwich delivered the "fleet" to the classrooms this afternoon.

Morning Music Selection of the Week at HES!
Troika from Lieutenant Kije
Sergei Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé music was originally written to accompany the film of the same name. It was Prokofiev's first attempt at film music, and his first commission from within the Soviet Union; he had lived abroad since the 1917 October Revolution. Later Prokofiev adapted the music into what became a popular orchestral suite, or collection of music.
After the film's successful release, the five-movement Kijé suite was first performed in December 1934, and quickly became part of the international concert repertoire. It has remained one of the composer's best known and most frequently recorded works, and parts of the suite's score have been used in several later films.
The music is often used to accompany pictures of a sleigh ride.
