What you might think is a relaxing treat on your day off, is in reality a major risk to your health. Getting your nails done seems harmless activity that most woman indulge without out any thoughts of it affecting them. Most people don’t even know that nail products that are used in salons contain hundreds of chemicals that are harmful to their health.
Formaldehyde (nail polish)
Difficulty breathing, irritated eyes, asthma-like attack’s including wheezing, also can cause certain cancers.
Toluene (fingernail glue)
Dry cracked skin, headaches, dizziness, damage to the liver and kidneys. Harm to unborn children during pregnancy.
Dibutyl Phthalate (nail polish)
(DBP) Nausea, and irritated eyes, skin nose, mouth and throat. Long term exposures to high concentrations may cause other serious effects.
The Toxic Trio
That’s Not All
Listed above are the three most used chemicals that cause the most harm, they are referred to as the “Toxic Trio.” There are hundreds more of chemicals that are used in nail products and they not only affect the customer but also the technicians that are working with the products daily. There are products that claim to be “3-free” of the Toxic Trio and acid free, but California Deparment of Toxic Substances Control, found that when tested, the products still contained the chemicals they said they did not contain.
How to Help the Cause?
You can help the cause by not going to nail salons that use products containing the list of harmful substances. Look at the product labels and read the warning and caution statements listed. Realize that this isn’t just a recreational activity to do with friends or on your day off, it could seriously affect your health and nail technicians as well.
