UOI # 6: Sharing the Planet
Alhamdulillah, we are in the final UOI of the school year!
Please find below details on the new UOI.
Central Idea: Human activities can influence our world's climate and the environment.
Lines of Inquiry:
- Changes to the Earth's atmosphere affect our weather conditions today.
- The way people live causes extreme weather around the world.
- Preventing climate change is the responsibility of all people.
- The three branches of government have a responsibility towards the environment.
Key Concepts: Causation (Why is it like it is?) and Responsibility (What is our responsibility?)
Learner Profile Attributes: Communicator and Knowledgeable.
Highlights from Class this Week
UOI/Language Arts
Students have been working on:
- make inferences about natural disasters based on information from texts.
- draw conclusions about natural disasters following a discussion.
- Vocabulary Unit 11 Test.
- editing and publishing their memoirs.
- explore the properties of air by using syringes and tubes to discover that air takes up space and is compressible.
- discuss evidence that air is matter and has mass.
Math
5th Grade: Fractions
Students have been working on
- Add and subtract fractions making like units numerically.
- Add and subtract fractions with sums greater than 2.
6th Grade: Expressions and Equations
Students have been working on
- write algebraic expressions that record all operations with numbers and letters standing for the numbers.
Next week, students will be working on solving equations.
Book Tournament Final Round
The final winner for the book tournament will be decided this upcoming Thursday, May 19th. The semi-finalists are:
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling (Yousuf Daoud)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (Aasiya Ali)

Other Reminders
- Living Classrooms field trip on Tuesday, 17th May. The bus will leave straight after morning assembly, and return a little after dismissal. Please ensure students
wear
weather-related clothing, and bring a lunch and snacks. We will be on the boat for 3-4 hours. - Manga High/Khan Academy.
- water bottle for recess.
- Learner Profile Attribute of May: Communicator! Be a communicator by communicating creatively and in different ways in more than one language. Listen carefully to the perspectives of others and keep track of instances in your LP passport.
- School closed for students on Friday, May 20th for a teacher work day.
