A Message from the Superintendent...
Red Ribbon Week was a fun way to teach a serious subject. The week may be over, but the spirit of the red ribbon is present everyday in our schools in the variety of ways we remind students about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of prevention, self-help, and reaching out to help friends. Thank you to all of our students, staff, and school leadership teams for making the week memorable.
While COVID-19 has taken center stage, the opioid epidemic has become one of the largest drug problems recorded in U.S. history. Check out Riverside County Public Health's Overdose Data to Action Program GIS driven dashboard here for local opioid-related data to learn more about this public health crisis. Maps are based on census tracts and interactive to allow the user to view more detail when a census tract is selected. Demographic data such as gender, age and race/ethnicity are also displayed on the dashboard. It's an eye opener.

COVID-19 Data Dashboard Update at a Glance....
Positive Cases this past week:
- 18 students (Up from 17 last week and 12 the prior week)
- 17 staff members (up from 13 last week and 2 the prior week)
Students Identified Through Contact Tracing:
- 157 students assigned modified quarantine (which means they can continue to attend school in-person as long as they don't develop symptoms and test twice weekly for two weeks)
- 42 students assigned full quarantine (home for at least 10 days)
Overall, we have been serving students in-person for 60 school days. We are one-third of the way through the school year. As of Friday, October 29, we have had 100 staff members and 350 students report a positive test for COVID-19. Stay current with our case rate by regularly tracking our COVID-19 Data Dashboard and FAQ here. Cases recorded on the Dashboard are confirmed by Riverside County Public Health officials and remain on the Dashboard for 14 days.
This past week in Riverside County, there were 493 new cases (0.1% increase) equating to 13.9 cases per 100K (7-day average), 7 new deaths (0.1% increase), and a 5.3% positivity 7-day rate (0.9% increase from 7-days prior). There are currently 252 COVID-19 hospitalized patients, 11 more patients hospitalized from the prior day total (4.6% increase). This data is as October 23, 2021 as reported on the State's tracking web site.
In other COVID news, with the imminent approval of a COVID-19 vaccine for children between 5-11 years of age coming soon, the questions I'm being asked revolve around the State's proposed plan to mandate vaccinations for students and staff.
These are the most frequently asked questions:
Q: What is required before California’s school vaccine regulation becomes a mandate?
A: The new state regulation requires that the vaccines for juveniles, ages 12 -17, and children, ages 5 to 11, are fully authorized by the FDA.
Q: Can students with a personal belief exemption attend school once the regulation becomes a mandate?
A: Yes. The State's proposed plan includes exemptions for personal beliefs and medical reasons. We intend to honor all permissible exemptions.
Q: Can state lawmakers eliminate some exemptions?
A: Yes. State lawmakers can eliminate some exemptions similar to the currently authorized mandated immunizations, which since 2016 only allows medical exemptions.
Thank You 7-11 & Welcome to the Community....
Marisela Recendez had the honor of cutting the ribbon. Students were treated to slurpees and other treats and gifts. Councilman Jim Perry was on hand to commemorate the festivities.
In Closing....
On behalf of your Board of Education and our entire team, thank you for your partnership and for your trust in us.
Stay positive. Test weekly. Be well.
Sincerely,
Allan Mucerino
