Hawks’ Weekly Update #3

Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to have your children return to school! I spoke with staff this week about one of the best features of our profession…new beginnings. We get the opportunity to start anew each year.

We spent the day Friday on our collective professional development. Our time together was very productive. We discussed the importance of stress management, and building a learning community in our classrooms and as a school. In addition, we launched our theme for the year: “We Can Do Hard Things.” This is all about creating a growth mindset in our students and learning to overcome adversity and solve complex problems. Our group is highly professional and a cohesive team dedicated to creating an excellent learning environment for children.

Our office staff and the building managers have also excelled like no group I have ever worked with. They have gone above and beyond in preparations for the return of the other staff and the children. I will always be grateful for their dedication.

See you all soon,

Pete Selleck

Monday, August 14 from 9am-3pm

Tuesday, August 15 from 2pm-4pm

Thank you in advance for your support to get the school year started smoothly. Distribution of chromebooks prior to the first day of school will be a great support to our dedicated school staff members. There are 3 components to this chromebook distribution process:

1. You will have the opportunity to purchase insurance for the chromebook for $40.

AUSD Student Chromebook Protection Plan

2. There will be an opportunity to obtain a PTA membership from our amazing group of PTA volunteers.

3. We will need all families to complete the Free & Reduced Meal Application, even if the family will not qualify for or take advantage of the school lunch program.

These forms ensure that Shadow Hills Elementary School will receive its proper Federal funding for important school functions such as academic and social emotional support, teacher training, and instructional equipment. This form can be accessed in advance at this link: schoolcafe.com. For any family registering a new account, our district will be listed as Alpine USD. If you need assistance with filling out the application or have any questions, please email Kelly Massey, Director of Child Nutrition Services, at kmassey@alpineschools.net

We look forward to seeing you at one of our scheduled Chromebook Distribution Days!

Please don’t hesitate to contact our front office staff at 619-445-2977 with any questions you may have.

Construction Update

Please pardon the inconvenience as the construction projects to add new roofing and H-Vacs to the classrooms continues. Air Conditioning is functioning while the work is being completed. Construction and repairs will only take place after school and on weekends. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

Bus Transportation

Start Time and Drop Off

First Bell Rings at 8:45 am. Gates open for Breakfast at 8:25 am. Please only drop off students after 8:20 am.

To prevent traffic congestion and promote safety, please pull forward as far as possible. If you would like to watch your child enter the gates, it is suggested that you pull into a parking space, and walk the child to the gate.

Dismissal Time and Pick Up

Students are dismissed at 3:02 pm. Cars line up in two rows. Students walk between rows. All cars are released once students have reached their vehicles. School staff uses radio to communicate when a child's ride has reached the group of cars ready to load. Please take care to only move the vehicle once school staff signals that it is safe to do so.

Popsicle Party and Class Roster Release

We hope you can attend the PTA-sponsored Popsicle Party, but if you cannot the class rosters will be accessible electronically through Synergy after 4 pm.

S.T.E.A.M. Update

S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. We are excited to announce the addition of a music teacher at Shadow Hills. Students will get music every other week with a talented teacher Tracy Rabasco. In addition, as a result of the support of the Alpine Education Foundation, students will have an opportunity to explore coding and robotics and have experiences with scientific gardening.
