LIBRARY NEWS
PSJA SOUTHWEST
Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a wonderful break and that the cold weather perhaps gave you the opportunity to read a good book or two! Here are the library highlights for the month of December. May this new semester bring you many blessings as we all prepare to see our first graduating seniors from PSJA Southwest. Good luck & happy 2014!
December Reading Millionaires
Five more Southwest readers became part of our prestigiuous Millionaire Club during the month of December. Congratulations to Leslie Manrique, Jessica Villagomez, Erick Olivo, Karen Longoria, & Aleyda Rodriguez! These students have participated in the AR program and have each read over one million words in the fist semester. Mllionaires received goodie baskets filled with treats and books.
Reading Wonderland
The library was filled with 33 lovely little story trees throughout the holidays in our 3rd annual Reading Wonderland. Students and teachers created special ornaments for their book-themed trees. A special "Thank you" to all the students that participated in this year's display and also to Sgt. Reyes, Ms.Schelstrate, Ms. Chiu, and Ms. Lara for helping create the magic. Participants were treated to hot chocolate & cookies in the library.
13 Reasons Why
The Javelina Book Club met on Dec. 13 to discuss Jay Asher's novel Thirteen Reasons Why. This is a very powerful novel that has been translated into 31 languages and its topic (suicide) is one of tremendous importance. Although it may be difficult to talk about, it is urgent to discuss this topic & other serious issues that many of our students may now be facing. Readers shared some very personal struggles they overcame in the past and ways to better communicate and understand each other. Thank you Ana B. & Sergio H. for leading this very important discussion. Great job!
Book Hoggers' Book Drive
We are happy to report that a total of 130 new & almost-new books were collected for donations to the Children's Cancer Center in McAllen. Thank you for making our 2nd annual book drive another successful one.
