Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
Last Tuesday, students enjoyed a fantastic storytelling assembly. Ethnotec presented Asia Fantasia, a collection of old folktales from a variety of Asian countries. We were not sure if our Kindergarten students could sit through an hour long assembly, but they were just as mesmerized as the rest of our students for the entire time. This is perhaps my fifth time watching Ethnotec perform and I am always entranced by the skillful storytelling. I would like to thank Young Audiences and Far West Fibers for their generous grant.
On another note, our teachers are busy today working on the report cards that will be sent home on February 9. Since students are assessed based on the end of the year standards for that grade level, I will not be surprised if your student receives a 1 or a 2 for most learning targets at this point in the year. As a parent trying to decipher this document, I would also be focusing on the rate of progress at which my student is traveling toward the target and the behavior key to see how my child is doing in the soft skills that lead to academic success. Attached is a document that explains the report card in detail.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner

School Board Passes Resolution to Authorize Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a five-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election. If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year. In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton’s elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools.

Book Drive at Oak Hills
Allison Enriquez, a former Oak Hills student and current 8th grader at Rachel Carson, is working with the Children's Book Bank for her 8th grade project. She is collecting gently used and new books - from newborn through grade school level - to give to children who have no books in their home. We will have collection bins at the school entrance and the library for two weeks starting Friday 2/2. If you have a large donation, please email enriquez.jill@gmail.com and we can arrange a pick up. You can learn more about the Book Bank at childrensbookbank.org. Thanks for supporting this great organization!

Career Fair - Volunteers Needed
Oak Hills will kick off its first annual Career Fair on April 10th from 8:15-10:30! This will be a great opportunity to highlight some amazing careers that our students might like to pursue after school! We are looking for presenters to give 10 minute presentations about the jobs they do. Students would rotate to your station, you'd give a 10 minute presentation and then another group of students would rotate to you. You'd give the presentation approximately 8 times.
Some of the questions that we'd love to have addressed during the presentation are:
- What do you ?
- What did you have to do to prepare for a job in that field?
- How has the shift in technology impacted your job?
- How do you impact the global workforce?
- How do you impact the community?
- Who are the key players you collaborate with in your field?
- How is your job interconnected with other jobs?
If you feel like you could participate in this informative day and help prepare our students for college and career readiness, please email Jennifer at jennifer_demartino@beaverton.k12.or.us!
Thanks,
Jennifer
