Help Make School a Safe and Happy Place to Learn
You want your child to behave at school and be safe here, too. To help make school a positive learning environment:
- Review school rules and discipline policies with your child. What is expected of her and others? Let your child know you support these rules, and maintain these expectations yourself.
- Talk about behavior and safety issues. Make sure you're both comfortable with your child's knowledge and skills.
- Get involved with school efforts to prevent problems such as bullying among students. Learn about consequences.
- Meet your child's friends and their families. When your child visits other children, make sure she spends time in safe, well-supervised settings.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCEDURES
August 2019
Dear Parent/Guardian:
In the event of a school emergency, please understand that each school in the Boise School District has an Emergency Response Plan that has been carefully developed and addresses a multitude of emergency situations. All of these plans have been developed through a coordinated effort with Ada County Emergency Management. If there is an emergency at your child’s school, your cooperation is necessary to help us respond effectively to such situations.
In the event of an emergency, please help us by doing the following:
Please do not call and do not go to the school.
In an emergency, onsite staff are focused solely on getting everyone to a safe location. Showing up to the site can create unnecessary traffic, preventing emergency vehicles from responding quickly. You could also put yourself or others in danger.
If you get a call or text from your student, help him or her remain calm. Remind your student that school staff know what to do in an emergency situation, and will work to keep everyone safe.
Please know we will communicate with parents/guardians about reunifying you with your child and that this reunification site may not be at the school.
Check the Boise School District homepage at www.boiseschools.org, the District Facebook page or our Twitter feed.
We will provide credible, accurate and useful information to the public as soon as possible. Please be aware that information received from sources other than the school administrator or Boise School District may be inaccurate.
Expect to see our posts updated as necessary. We will also provide updates to local news media, but emergency situations can change rapidly. Typically, multiple agencies are involved, so communication is coordinated through the “lead agency,” which may cause a delay in notification.
Sign-Up for Emergency Text Messaging:
We will use our emergency text notification system to contact parents and guardians. Please make sure your emergency contact information is always up to date at your child's school.
Parent/guardians whose contact information is on file with your child’s school may sign-up for emergency text messaging.
Simply text SUBSCRIBE to the number 67587. You'll know you were successful if you receive the following reply message in English:
“You're now registered with School Messenger notification service. Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help. Msg&data rates may apply.”
Repeat the opt-in process for any wireless numbers that you wish to include.
In addition to performing the opt-in process above, please ensure that the District has your wireless number(s) in our student information database. If you haven't already provided that information to your school please contact them as soon as possible.
Non-parents may receive emergency text messages by downloading the Boise School District’s Mobile app. The app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Familiarize yourself with the terms that can be used during any emergency situation:
Shelter-in-place: Used to secure the building from a potential threat outside the building, such as when an unauthorized person is loitering on school grounds or when there is criminal activity in the neighborhood. Exterior doors are locked, but normal activities continue inside the building. Used during severe weather or other environmental threats (e.g., air contamination due to a local fire) to keep people safe while remaining indoors.
Lockdown: Used when there is a perceived danger inside the building. Doors are locked, windows are closed and locked, blinds are closed. People are directed to move away from windows and doors. Hallways are cleared of students and school staff.
Evacuation: When students and staff are moved out of the building to a pre-designated safe location.
Reverse Evacuation: Used when there is a perceived danger outside the building. Students are brought in from outside. Lockdown procedures may be followed once inside.
Reunification Site: An alternative site other than the school where school administrators will check-out students to the child’s parent/guardian. Students will only be released to authorized parents/guardians with proper identification (e.g. driver’s license, state identification, etc.)
All Boise School District staff members, parents, students and community members are encouraged to report anything they see, hear or are made aware of that may impact a school or school program. If you see or hear something, say something: call 911 or Boise Police Department at 208-343-COPS.
Please discuss these matters with your immediate family. Planning ahead will help alleviate concern during emergencies. Thank you in advance for following these steps to ensure our students, staff members and public remain safe and secure.
Sincerely,
Gale Zickefoose

FLU SHOT CLINIC FOR STUDENTS - SEPTEMBER 17TH
Dear Parents/Guardian:
The Central District Health Department (CDHD) is helping to protect students against the seasonal flu. With an aim to keep children in school and sick days to a minimum, CDHD will be offering a convenient in-school flu vaccination program for students this fall. The best way to protect your child against the flu is through vaccination. CDHD is offering the injectable flu vaccine.
What is my cost? There is no cost for the flu vaccine; however, there is an administration fee. CDHD will bill your insurance/Medicaid for the administration fee. If you do not have insurance or your insurance does not fully cover the cost, CDHD will cover the remaining cost. There will be no out-of-pocket cost. A copy of CDHD’s financial and privacy practices can be found on our website at: https://www.cdhd.idaho.gov/hl-immunizations-beforeyourappointment.php or can be obtained from your child’s school.
Vaccination Clinic Details: September 17, 2019
If you would like your child to receive a flu vaccine at school, please complete the enclosed consent form.
1. Complete, sign and date the Immunization Client Information/Consent Form
2. Return the completed consent form to your child’s teacher by September 13, 2019
3. ALL of the questions MUST be answered on the form; CDHD will be unable to vaccinate students with incomplete paperwork.
***Do NOT return the Consent Form if you do not wish your child to be vaccinated at school. ***
The following information is included in this letter:
1. Client Information/Consent Form-located on the back of this letter
2. Influenza Vaccine Information Statements
If you submit a consent form to the school and your child receives a flu vaccine elsewhere before the scheduled school vaccination clinic, you must pick up your child’s consent form at the school before the scheduled clinic date to be sure that your child is not re-vaccinated.
If you have any questions regarding this in-school flu vaccination program or eligibility, please direct calls to Central District Health Department at 327-7400. We are pleased to offer this convenient service. However, this vaccination clinic should not take the place of your child’s usual visit with your primary care provider or pediatrician.
The day of the vaccine clinic, your child will receive a stamp on their hand to indicate they received the flu vaccine. The stamp will look like this:
Sincerely,
Alisha Munoz
Registered Nurse Senior
Remember to:

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This year I will be teaching part of the state mandated Health Curriculum. All of the information is introduced in an age appropriate manner, follows our School Board approved health textbook and will meet the requirements as outlined in the state guidelines. This information is available on the web at www.boiseschools.org or from the nurse.
In Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades students will learn about types of germs and how they are spread. In addition, the students will learn healthy behaviors that will reduce their chance of becoming sick, and how to protect themselves.
In 3rd grade students will continue to learn about germs and their role in causing disease. They will learn about the immune system and how it works to keep us healthy. We will also discuss how to prevent injuries and practice daily healthy habits.
In 4th grade we will focus on the prevention and control of disease. We will talk about the prevention of common childhood injuries, illnesses, and identify a variety of healthy practices and behaviors that maintain or improve health. We will discuss communicable diseases and explore the role of components of blood relating to the immune system. We will learn how vaccines work and the outcome of various options when making health related decisions.
In 5th grade students will have a lesson that focuses on growth and development. They will learn about the physical characteristics and emotions that accompany adolescence and puberty. They will also learn about appropriate hygiene and health needs. For this lesson we will separate students by gender. The students will have a similar lesson in 6th grade. A parent notification letter will be sent home prior to these lessons.
In 5th and 6th grades, students will continue to learn about communicable and noncommunicable illnesses and how to make good choices in regard to their own health. Part of the lesson will address Bloodborne pathogens (HIV, Hepatitis B and C) and how students can protect themselves by not touching other people’s blood or contaminated needles. In addition to this, 6th grade students will learn about sexually transmitted diseases. Prevention of these diseases will focus on abstinence and saying no to illegal drug use.
Exclusion forms are available if you would prefer that your child not attend one of the above-mentioned lessons. If you would like to discuss this or have any other questions about this Health Curriculum, please contact me. I will be happy to discuss the lesson plans with you.
Sincerely,
Terri Lindemann, MSN-PH, RN, BSN

Health Screening Information
Dear Parent,
In the Boise School District, a core service of our school health program is the ongoing screening for specific problems that, when identified early, can prevent significant health and academic issues. The earlier these health conditions are detected, the more favorable the outlook for treatment and improvement of the child’s general well-being. The health screenings routinely conducted in our program include height/weight, dental, vision and spinal screenings.
There are wide variations in “normal” height and weight. Many factors, including genetics, can affect a child’s size. For more information on normal growth, including growth charts and BMI (Body Mass Index), you can log onto: www.kidsgrowth.com or www.medcalc.com/growth
Poor dental health can cause pain and affects overall health and a student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom. Our school dental screening looks for the more obvious signs of dental problems, such as red & swollen gums, large cavities, broken teeth, or infections. The purpose of our screening is to detect problems, and is not a substitute for regular dental care.
The purpose of the school vision screening program is to identify students with visual impairments. Early detection of vision problems will provide a child more opportunity for educational success. We are able to screen for possible problems with distance vision and Amblyopia (lazy eye) at school. We are unable to screen for every vision problem, specifically near vision issues. For this reason, a more thorough exam by an eye doctor every 2 years is appropriate for most children.
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that occurs in the cervical, thoracic and/or lumbar spine. Scoliosis occurs during rapid growth spurts of the pre-adolescent and adolescent periods. The purpose of school screening is to detect scoliosis at an early stage when it can be monitored and early treatment programs will be effective in halting progression of the deformity.
This year, as a part of the Boise School District health program, we will be conducting vision and health/weight screening in Kindergarten, 2nd and 5th grade students. The dental hygienist from the Boise School Dental Clinic will be screening for dental problems this year. Later in the year, we will be conducting scoliosis screening for fifth grade girls. If problems are found, a referral form will be sent home with your student. If you would like to discuss the screenings or have any other questions about the screening process, please contact me. I will be happy to discuss this with you.
Sincerely,
