Principal's Update - January 2016

Ben Franklin names Teacher of the Year and Educational Services Professional of the Year!

We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Amy Reif was named this year's Ben Franklin Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Reif has worked at Ben Franklin for many years and served as an academic support reading teacher. Like many of our teachers, she is highly trained in a wide variety of literacy programs and strategies. Mrs. Reif is always willing to lend a hand, help a student, and support a colleague.

Mrs. Wendy Offery was named this year's Ben Franklin Educational Services Professional of the Year. Mrs. Offery has served as Ben Franklin's media specialist for many years. She is a multi-talented and highly trained member of the staff who is outgoing and always willing to help students and staff.

We are proud to have these two teachers representing our school this year!

Skype Call with Taiwan Sister School Brings Students Together

Students in Mrs. Schmidt's third grade class along with Mrs. Muzi and Mr. Meurer participated in an early morning Skype session with students at the Jian-An School, our sister school in Taiwan. The students introduced themselves, exchanged videos of cultural events in their schools, asked and answered questions, completed a craft, and sang songs. This unique opportunity at Ben Franklin allowed these students to begin to understand their role in the world, how cultures around the world are similar and different, and the responsibilities of being a global citizen. Many thanks to Mrs. Muzi for her continued leadership in this partnership. Check out the video below of the students singing our Take Care song.

Third Grade Concert Hits a High Note!

This year's Third Grade Concert was a huge success! Students performed The Grumps of Ring-a-Ding Town. Many families came out to enjoy the evening and see the students perform. The performance was also broadcast on LTPS-TV. Many thanks to musical director Mr. Rigby and art director Mr. Colavita. Additional thanks to the third grade teachers, related arts staff, main office staff, and custodial staff who also assisted in making the performance as great as it was. Check out a brief video of a rehearsal of one of the students' favorite songs here.

The Return of the Benny

The Benny Award has been rebooted for 2016! Students met with Mr. Meurer and Mrs. Wolf this week to discuss how it will be used as a weekly award to support students in the lunch room. Our school-wide lunch expectations use the acronym EAT.

E - Eat your food neatly at your seat

A - Always recycle and throw away trash

T - Talk quietly with friends

At the end of each lunch time, the lunch aides will guide the students in self-reflecting and award up to 3 Benny nominations for each class (one per letter of EAT). On Friday, winners will be drawn for each lunch period and Benny trophies will be awarded for the week.

Check out the fun trailer below. We used it with students at our recent Spirit Day to get them excited for The Benny.
