CANNON CONNECTION
A newsletter for Cannon Elementary families - 2018-2019
WEEK OF OCTOBER 22, 2018
Hi Cannon Parents!
Thank you to all of our parents who have signed up to attend one of our Parent Tours this week at Cannon! We had such a great response - each of our tour times is FULL!! We look forward to seeing you on the date/time you signed up for!
Please plan to arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of your tour time, so that you can check in at the office. (See information in this newsletter about how to gain entrance into the building/office!). Please attend the tour time that you signed up for online, as there are limited spots for each tour. There will be a list of all of the parents who signed up for each tour time at the front office, so after you check in, you will be given a pass to come to the school cafeteria. Tours will start promptly at the time stated for each tour, in order to honor the time of each of our tour guides and guests. We are excited to show off our new school and spend some time explaining some of the intentional design concepts that will have an incredible impact on learning for our Cannon Cubs.
If we don't see you at a tour this week, we hope to see you at one of the fun events this week, including Spooky Skate Night @ Skatetown on Monday, Cici's Pizza Night On Thursday, or at our Friday assembly this week, featuring some special Veterans & American Heroes as guests! Information about each of these events is in this newsletter!
Proud to be your principal,
Mrs. Blizzard

UPDATES & REMINDERS
IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR PARENTS!
BIG THANKS to all of our parents for your help as we have adjusted to MANY new procedures at Cannon, involving arrival & dismissal. Your help with the following reminders is appreciated!
- SCHOOL BEGINS AT 7:40 - If you are still in the car lane or walking up to the school at 7:38-7:40, your child will not be able to be in class by 7:40. In other words, if you arriving "on time" (7:40 am) you are late! The doors lock at the 7:40 bell and students will be counted tardy if they arrive after this time. PLEASE make a slight adjustment to your morning routines to help your child arrive a few minutes earlier each day.
- The school parking lot that currently exists on our school property is for staff parking ONLY between 6:30-8:30 am & 1:30-3:30 pm. Student safety is our first priority and we cannot have cars pulling in or out of the parking areas during arrival/dismissal times. Cones will be set up to remind parents when the parking lot is closed for non-staff parking use.
- CROSSWALK ON COLLEGE HAS MOVED to the intersection of College & Pebblebrook. For our students/families that walk to school, please remember to use this crosswalk, to avoid having to cross in front of cars pulling into the drop-off/pick-up lane.
- PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IN RAIN GEAR -Due to the longer and uncovered walkways from car/bus lanes, we encourage all parents to dress their children in rain gear on days where there is heavy rain predicted! While we will certainly have staff outside with umbrellas to help out, we simply do not have enough staff members available to walk students to cars/buses individually under umbrellas.
HOW DO I GET INTO CANNON IF I NEED TO PICK MY CHILD UP, DROP SOMETHING OFF TO THE OFFICE, OR ATTEND A MEETING?
If you are coming to the campus to volunteer, drop off something, visit a teacher/student, or to drop off/pick up your child during the school day, you will walk down the same walkway towards the entrance students are using and make a right to follow the sidewalk to another door, just a short distance away. At this door, you will see an intercom mounted near the door and you will need to press the button and remain standing in front of the camera. After someone from the office answers you and is able to identify/verify your identity, they will release the lock so that you can enter through this door. Please stand in clear view of this camera in order to gain admittance and respond loudly/clearly when prompted by a staff member. This door takes you through the administrative suite of offices and will lead you to the reception area, where you can check in with our front office staff. This entrance forces all guests to enter the building in an area that is secured from the remainder of the school.
Please note that neither of these entrances are permanent. They are being used as temporary entrances until we are able to access our main entrance, after the demolition of our old school.
Come to Cannon Night @ Skatetown - SPOOKY SKATE!
We hope to see you there!

Attention all 4th and 5th grade students:
We are excited to announce that Cannon Elementary will be forming a Safety Patrol team this year. We will begin this program on Monday, October 29. If you are interested in being a part of the Cannon Safety Patrol, please stop by the office and pick up an application.
Safety Patrol members will serve a two week rotation. During the assigned rotation students will be expected to arrive at school by 7:15 and ready at their assigned duty spot at 7:20.
5th grade students only: This will be an additional leadership opportunity to serve as a Safety Patrol Captain. This job will require putting out the cones, take attendance for members on that particular rotation, help with any communication, and serve in the lead position. This leadership opportunity will be for a minimum of one 2 week rotation. If your child is currently serving as a STEMbassador then he/she will not be able to serve as a captain.
