The Hive in Room 5
Here's the buzz...
Reading
This week we read Crabby Cat at School and focused on the following skills:
- using words we know to figure out new words
- finding little words in big words
- using word endings to figure out unfamiliar words
- rereading a sentence to figure out a new word
- identifying problem and solution
- using a dictionary to problem solve and unknown word
Queen Bee
We got to know our very own Skyler Cohen as she was our Queen Bee this week. We really enjoyed having her mom come in to read today!
Pencils
The first week of school was long ago...or so it seems:) Many first graders are in need of some new pencils. Please send some new ones to school with your child if necessary. Thanks!
Writing
We read the mentor text, I Love Animals, and wrote stories about the animals we love and why we love them. This week we continued to practice 5 star sentences. A first grade 5 star sentence has appropriate upper case letters, punctuation, spacing, handwriting, and spelling of word wall words. We expect first graders to practice writing 5 star sentences in their Wednesday night homework and in their stories in class.
Science
In honor of Red Ribbon Week, we learned how to protect our lungs from tobacco smoke, how to identify if a behavior is healthy or unhealthy, and we practiced skills for saying NO to tobacco. We also learned what medicine is and identified people who are appropriate to help with the safe use of medicines.
Math
In math, we continued to work in unit 2 telling time to the hour, counting pennies and nickels, and exchanging pennies for nickels. We introduced number models and practiced solving number stories involving addition and subtraction. Our unit 2 math test will be on Tuesday.
Pumpkin Math
Pumpkin Math will take place on Tuesday, October 29th. The following volunteers are scheduled to come in for our exciting event: Mrs. Brunell, Mrs. Eorio, Mrs. Glasby, Mrs. Bauer, Mrs. Jann, Mrs. Scott, Mr. Garvey, and Mrs. Lerro. Thank you for sending in the pumpkins for the kids!
Thursday Folders
This is just a reminder that Thursday folders will only come home on the Thursdays when I have papers to share. When your child brings home a Thursday folder, please empty the papers from the Thursday folder and return it to school empty on the next school day. Thank you!
Halloween
Halloween is fast approaching. This week I sent out an email from our homeroom parents with a Sign-up Genius link for party donations. If you did not receive the email, please let me know and I will send it to you again. Gayman's Halloween parade will be on Thursday, October 31st at 9:15AM and the party will be from 2:00 - 3:00PM.
